Bernie Sanders embraces ‘dadcore’ in woollen mittens at Inauguration ceremony

While his peers upped the fashion ante in an array of stylish ensembles, Vermont junior Senator Bernie Sanders took a decidedly more low-key approach to his Inauguration Day attire.

79-year-old Sanders sported his now-signature mackintosh from Burton, a snowboarding company based in Burlington, Vermont, and a pair of recycled woollen mittens, which are also made in Vermont, and have set tongues wagging on Twitter.

The Fairisle-print mittens in question are made by Jen Ellis, a teacher, who gave them to him more than two years ago and was surprised when he began wearing them on the campaign trail. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.

The mittens first went viral last January at the Women’s March in New Hampshire, which led to the establishment of a @BerniesMittens Twitter account in homage to the woollen hand-warmers.

‘Dadcore’ is the name given to fashion that embraces the fuddy-duddy, practical aesthetic that many associate with fatherhood. Other renowned champions of the trend include former President Barack Obama, the commander-in-chief of Dad jeans, windbreaker jackets and Asics trainers.

Elsewhere at today’s ceremony, the 46th President Joe Biden wore a suit by Ralph Lauren, as did the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, Doug Emhoff, while First Lady Dr. Jill Biden wore a dazzling blue ensemble by emerging New York label Markarian.
