Yahoo Finance Ben Chilwell hails ‘superb’ Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after ‘hell on earth’ of Brentford onslaught
Chelsea goalscorer Ben Chilwell lavished praise upon team-mate Edouard Mendy after the goalkeeper’s inspired display at Brentford.
The Senegalese international was in sensational form during Saturday evening’s tense west London derby, making a string of fantastic saves to deservedly earn man-of-the-match honours.
His stellar performance helped to preserve a hard-fought three points for Chelsea after Chilwell’s half-volley on the stroke of half-time as the reigning European champions leapfrogged Liverpool to go back top of the Premier League.
Such heroics - which came in the face of relentless late Brentford pressure - saw many once again question why Mendy was not included on the 30-man shortlist for the men’s 2021 Ballon d’Or award.
“Mendy was superb,” Chilwell told Sky Sports. “We see it every day in training and he is now gettng the credit he deserves in these games by making big saves to get us the points. We showed our steel and how strong we are defensively.
"We spoke about coming out and trying to get back in the swing of things. The preparation is not brilliant but it is about mentality and that was there.
"You have ups and downs, the important thing is to train hard and when you get your chances, take them."
Chilwell described Brentford’s relentless second-half onslaught in search of an equaliser as like “hell on earth”.
“It was very tough,” he said. “The last 20 minutes we showed the mentality we need to show all season.
“They have had a brilliant start to the season and their fans are good for them. In the last 20 minutes to half an hour they were really pushing them on and it was hell on earth.”
