Basketballer LeBron James Gets $13.4 Million For Coconut Grove Contemporary

SELLER: LeBron James
LOCATION: Coconut Grove, FL
PRICE: $13,400,000
SIZE: 12,178 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 8.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Basketball great and neophyte actor LeBron James has sold a contemporary mansion in Coconut Grove, FL, for $13.4 million. The waterside property was originally listed last October (2014) at $17 million —$8 million more than the $9 million dollars the six-foot-eight-inch forward paid for the place in late 2010 — and the price tag plummeted to $15 million in late April (2015) before it attracted a serious buyer who managed to negotiate another $1.6 million off the asking price.

Listing details show the three-story mansion, custom built from the ground up in 2010, has a total of six bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms in 12,178 square feet that includes: a double-height and marble-floored foyer with sweeping curved staircase; a dark paneled office/library on the ground floor; a second-floor living room with five-seat wet bar and terrace access; a double-island kitchen with stainless steel tile back splashes and a sommelier-worthy wine cellar; and an eight-seat home theater. In addition to a handful of en suite bedrooms in the main residence, which including a master suite that opens to a private waterside balcony, there’s a separate guesthouse atop the detached three-car garage. A roof top terrace provides panoramic views while the compact waterside backyard — fitted with an extensive, multi-colored LED lighting system that lights it up like a Christmas tree — squeezes in a puny patch of grass, a summer kitchen, infinity edge swimming pool, and a concrete dock that accommodates two 60-foot boats. The walled and gated property, at the tail end of a cul-de-sac lined with much more modest and far less expensive homes, is decked out with an elevator, a generator for power outages, and a state-of-the-art security system.

The property was purchased through a corporate entity controlled, according to numerous South Florida property gossip columns, by shopping center owner Timo Kipp and his wife Nathalia Kipp, a real estate agent who brokered the deal on her and her husband’s behalf. As it turns out, this is not the first home of a sports star owned by Mister and Missus Kipp; Just a few months ago the couple sold a five bedroom mansion in nearby Coral Gables for $7.1 million that previously belonged to Miami Heat player turned executive Alonzo Mourning.

Mister James, who returned amid great fanfare and hullabaloo to dribble and shoot for the Cleveland Cavaliers last summer after two successful seasons with the Miami Heat and who is charming as could be as a penny-pinching version of himself in the Amy Schumer starring rom-com “Trainwreck,” presumably moved back to his recently renovated seven-plus acre estate in Akron, OH, that includes, per the Summit County Tax Man, a 19-room main residence of more than 30,000-square-feet with half of a dozen bedrooms and eight full and six half bathrooms.
