April 22 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games. - - - Yankees 9, Red Sox 3 Jacoby Ellsbury returned to Boston and combined with Japanese rookie Masahiro Tanaka to pace the New York Yankees to a 9-3 rout of the Red Sox. The center fielder, who left Boston to sign a seven-year, $153 million contract with New York (12-8) in the off season, led the game off with a triple in the first and then doubled home two runs in the fifth that chased starter Jon Lester. Tanaka (3-0, 2.15 ERA) gave up back-to-back home runs to Boston (9-12) in the third inning but went 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven. Tanaka, who compiled a spotless 24-0 record in Japan last season, has not lost a game since 2012. - - - Angles 7, Nationals 2 Albert Pujols hit two homers to reach 500 for his career and drove in five runs as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Washington Nationals. Pujols homered in the first inning and the fifth against Washington (11-10) pitcher Taylor Jordan to take over the American League lead in home runs with eight. - - - Tigers 8, White Sox 6 Miguel Cabrera broke out of a batting slump with three hits and three RBIs, including his second home run this season, and the Detroit Tigers hung on for an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Cabrera, the reigning two-time American League Most Valuable Player, was batting .206 with seven RBIs entering the game before his third multi-hit outing. The Tigers (10-7) pounded White Sox (10-11) pitching for 15 hits, while Detroit starter Justin Verlander (3-1) picked up his third consecutive victory. - - - Cardinals 3, Mets 0 Adam Wainwright pitched seven shutout innings before departing with an injury and center fielder Jon Jay had a two-run single in the fourth inning of the St Louis Cardinals' win over the New York Mets. Wainwright, who threw a two-hitter last Thursday in the Cardinals' 8-0 win over Washington, suffered a hyperextended right knee when he awkwardly tried to field the final out of the seventh. St Louis improved to 12-9 while the Mets fell to 10-10. - - - Marlins 1, Braves 0 Jose Fernandez pitched eight shutout innings to help Miami to a win over the Atlanta Braves and give the Marlins their first road victory of the season. Fernandez (3-1) dominated Atlanta (13-7) in allowing just three hits and matching his career high with 14 strikeouts. He threw 109 pitches, the most in his career, and worked past the seventh inning for the first time this season. - - - Blue Jays 9, Orioles 3 Brett Lawrie and Melky Cabrera hit three-run homers in the eighth inning to break a tie and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles. Nelson Cruz hit a three-run homer for the Orioles (9-10) and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion belted a three-run shot for the Blue Jays (11-9) to leave the score tied at 3-3 after six innings. - - - Reds 4, Pirates 1 Johnny Cueto tossed his second straight complete game to silence Pittsburgh and lead Cincinnati to victory. Cueto, who shutout the Pirates (9-12) on Wednesday, allowed just three hits and one run this time while adding an RBI single at the plate for the Reds (9-11). - - - Rays 7, Twins 3 Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price followed his worst outing of the season with a major bounce-back in a complete-game six-hitter that helped the Rays beat the Minnesota Twins. Price went a season-low five innings and allowed six earned runs on Thursday in a loss to the New York Yankees. David DeJesus led the way at the plate for the Rays (10-10) with three hits and three RBIs. - - - Rockies 2, Giants 1 Franklin Morales pitched seven strong innings and struck out seven to guide Colorado past San Francisco. Troy Tulowitzki and third baseman Nolan Arenado homered for the Rockies (12-10), who improved to 4-1 on the homestand. The Giants fell to 11-10. - - - Royals 8, Indians 2 First baseman Eric Hosmer had four hits, third baseman Mike Moustakas belted a three-run home run, and right-hander James Shields pitched six strong innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians. Shields (2-2) pitched six innings, giving up one earned run on six hits, with nine strikeouts and one walk to get the win. - - - Cubs 9, Diamondbacks 2 Jason Hammel threw seven strong innings, third baseman Mike Olt hit his fourth home run, and the Chicago Cubs won consecutive games for the first time this season. Olt finished 3-for-4 to lead the way for the Cubs (7-12) against the struggling D-Backs (5-18). - - - Phillies 3, Dodgers 2 Dominic Brown's RBI double in the 10th inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ben Revere finished 4-for-5 at the plate for Philadelphia (10-10) and starter A.J. Burnett tossed 6 2/3 innings and also went 3-for-3 at the plate in his no-decision. The Dodgers' (12-9) loss saw Adrian Gonzalez go 0-for-3 to snap his 16-game hit streak. - - - Rangers 5, Athletics 4 Josh Wilson hit an RBI double and scored on left fielder Michael Choice's single as the Texas Rangers rallied to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeat the Oakland A's. The Rangers (13-8) beat the A's (13-7) for the second straight time and will go for a series sweep on Wednesday. - - - Padres 2, Brewers 1 (12 innings) Third baseman Chase Headley homered in the 12th inning and the San Diego Padres snapped a two-game losing streak with a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee's (15-6) bullpen was still recovering from a 14-inning affair on Sunday in Pittsburgh. Headley went 2-for-4 with a walk for the Padres (10-11). - - - Astros 5, Mariners 2 Houston Astros pitcher Collin McHugh earned his first career victory on his debut with his new team. The 26-year-old right-hander, who spent parts of the last two seasons with the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies, pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Jason Castro, designated hitter Chris Carter and third baseman Matt Dominguez all homered as the Astros (7-14) while Seattle (7-13) fell to their eighth straight defeat. (Editing by John O'Brien)
