BAE Systems Inks Contract with Southwest Airlines to Support World's Largest Fleet of 737s

Southwest Airlines has selected BAE Systems as its exclusive provider of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for the full authority digital engine controls (FADEC) on more than 450 737 Next Generation aircraft. Under the five-year agreement, BAE Systems will provide proactive repairs that will improve the availability and reliability of Southwest's fleet.

BAE Systems will perform the services through FADEC International, its 50-50 joint venture with Sagem (Safran group). Through FADEC International, the two companies develop, manufacture, and support high-reliability aircraft electronics for harsh engine environments. The company serves airlines and aircraft maintenance and repair providers with a full range of aftermarket capabilities. Leveraging extensive knowledge of severe engine environments, FADEC design attributes, and repair history, BAE Systems has developed a robust process that helps customers decrease costs, simplify maintenance, and enhance their services.

“Southwest Airlines is excited to enter into a five year exclusive services agreement with BAE Systems for CFM56-7 FADEC repair and overhaul,” said Bill Tiffany, vice president of Supply Chain at Southwest. “BAE Systems has consistently delivered high quality, reliable repair and overhaul services at a competitive price. By minimizing the turn times of FADECs, we have been able to reduce our spare pool over the life of the fleet.”

Backed by an extended warranty, BAE Systems' FADEC solutions provide airlines with significant improvements in reliability by offering the flexibility to obtain overhaul services during scheduled engine shop visits. Doing so minimizes potential delays and cancellations for both airlines and their passengers.
