Tip of the week

Teaching students about money is one of the most important things they can learn, reckons Araminta Robertson, the creator of Financially Mint, a blog that aims to help students learn how to manage money while in college.

“The first step is showing them that money is important and that they need to learn how to manage it – the rest will come with self-motivation and a bit of guidance,” she advises.

But parents can be a huge help, she says.

“A way to get them interested is by using the words ‘how to make money’. No one can resist that, least of all, students. Tell your son/daughter/nephew/niece/whoever that you can teach them how to make money, and that you’ll help them through the process. If they have a mentor to look up to, they won’t feel so lost and confused.”
