Yahoo Finance Awful, Underpaid and Stressful: The Top 10 Worst Jobs for 2014
Lumberjacks can’t cut it. The tree fellers hold the dubious honor of worst job for 2014. That’s according to CareerCast.com, which released its 26 th evaluation of the best and worst jobs for the year.
CareerCast evaluated the income, outlook, environmental factors, stress, and physical demands of 200 professions across a wide variety of industries, salaries and skill levels to create its Jobs Rated List. According to CareerCast:
Unlike many other facets of life, the jobs we work at are choices we make — ones we can stick with or change. Therefore, the “measure” of a job can tell us a lot about the quality of our lives.
The quality of life for loggers is bleak. Low pay, poor employment prospects, harsh working conditions and a high risk of injury and even death — that’s how the lumberjack profession is described.
Newspaper reporter came in a close second to logger in the worst jobs category. Other vocations that rounded out the 10 top worst jobs are:
Enlisted military personnel.
Taxi driver.
Broadcaster.
Head cook.
Flight attendant.
Garbage collector.
Firefighter.
Corrections officer.
On the other end of the spectrum, math reigns supreme. With a median annual salary of $101,000, diversity in career choice and a positive outlook for continued growth, mathematician was ranked as the best job of the year. Click here for the rest of the list.
Apparently I should have worked harder in math and science. My passion for writing earned me the “honor” of having worked in two of the top five worst jobs – broadcaster and newspaper reporter.
Sadly, I have to agree with CareerCast’s evaluation – incredibly low pay and high stress. Sure, both jobs were fun and rewarding at times, but that didn’t pay the bills. The demanding work hours – including all holidays — didn’t make for a very good quality of life.
