Apple in talks with BMW about electric car: Report

Is Apple gearing up to give Tesla a run for its money?

Is Apple (AAPL) gearing up to give Tesla (TXL-CA) a run for its money?

Apple has been in talks with BMW over using BMW's i3 electric vehicles as a basis for an electric car project the tech giant is working on, according to German publication Manager Magazin .

Tim Cook, along with other Apple executives, recently met with BMW in Germany to visit its i3 production line, as reported in Manager Magazin's July issue.

When reached on Monday afternoon, a BMW spokesman told CNBC it holds "regular talks with companies from the telecommunications and IT industry, including Apple, about vehicle connectivity topics," adding that "vehicle development and production are not the subject of these talks."

Reports of a possible Apple electric vehicle first surfaced earlier this year. Back in February, sources familiar with the project told The Wall Street Journal that several hundred employees had been working on the project, code-named Titan, after an approval from Cook one year prior.

Apple declined to comment on the matter.
