Banco Santander Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Non-Independent Non-executive Director Francisco Javier Botín-Sanz de Sautuola y O’Shea made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for €12m worth of shares at a price of €3.75 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than €3.24 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Banco Santander insiders own about €477m worth of shares (which is 0.9% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
