Airbnb's impact on San Francisco housing and the bogus bid for Avon

The major stock indices (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) are flat as a pancake today. It seems we'll end the week range bound, as has been the trend all year.

Here are some of the other stories Yahoo Finance is keeping an eye on today.

Avon's bogus bid?
The Securities and Exchange is reportedly investigating that apparently bogus takeover offer for Avon (AVP) yesterday. This filing appeared on the SEC website from PTG Capital Partners, a company which doesn't seem to exist. The offer to buy Avon for more than $18 dollars a share sent the stock price soaring.

Airbnb disrupting housing market
The real estate market is REALLY tight in San Francisco. Could Airbnb be partially to blame? City officials say about 15 percent of vacant rental properties are being kept off the market because owners are holding them for short-term rentals instead--  like those offered by Airbnb and others alternative hoteliers.

The big business of fertility
There's a new cottage industry...making babies. For a growing number of couples, having a baby isn't easy and a lot of them are using in vitro fertilization to get pregnant.  But that's costly and often not covered by insurance.  So those hope-to-be parents are tapping savings, taking out loans from fertility financing firms...even using crowdfunding to pay for it.
