AdventHealth suspends COVID-19 vaccine mandate for staff, including JoCo locations

AdventHealth, whose Shawnee Mission facility supports nearly 700 physicians and 3,300 associates, suspended its employee vaccine mandate, according to a company spokeswoman.

The national network of health care facilities made the announcement Thursday, following a federal court’s blocking of a vaccine mandate from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. AdventHealth has physician offices throughout Wyandotte and Johnson counties, and campuses in Lenexa, Shawnee Mission and south Overland Park.

“Due to recent decisions by the federal courts to block the CMS vaccine mandate, we are suspending the vaccination requirements prescribed by this mandate,” said Morgan Shandler, director of communications for AdventHealth.

She said 87% of their local team members are vaccinated and the company is encouraging more staff to get their COVID vaccine.

“We will continue to monitor the ongoing litigation regarding the federal law,” Shandler said in the statement.

As of Dec. 3, about 57% of Kansans reported receiving one dose of the COVID vaccine and 49% were fully vaccinated, according to data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Vials of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine sit in a cooler before being thawed. 70 children in Prince George’s County, Maryland were given expired doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, county health officials said.
