Should You Be Adding TE Connectivity (NYSE:TEL) To Your Watchlist Today?

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like TE Connectivity (NYSE:TEL). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business than can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

TE Connectivity's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that TE Connectivity has grown EPS by 40% per year, over the last three years. That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). TE Connectivity maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 8.3% to US$14b. That's progress.

Are TE Connectivity Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since TE Connectivity has a market capitalization of US$31b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at US$73m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

Is TE Connectivity Worth Keeping An Eye On?

TE Connectivity's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering TE Connectivity for a spot on your watchlist. Now, you could try to make up your mind on TE Connectivity by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
