Eight people have been killed and more than 20 injured after a student opened fire at a university in the Russian city of Perm on Monday, 20 September, BBC reported.

The shooting suspect, who has been identified as a student of the university, was wounded while being detained. He is now under treatment in a hospital, the Investigative Committee law enforcement agency said in a statement, Reuters reported.

According to reports, the gunman was acting alone and lay claim to no political or religious motives, BBC reported.

The incident occurred at 10:30 am IST at Perm State University, which is situated around 1,300 kilometre east of the country's capital, Moscow, BBC reported.

Videos circulating on social media show students throwing belongings out of the windows from buildings on campus before jumping to flee from the shooter.

Some even locked themselves into a classroom to hide. Earlier on Monday, the school’s social media had warned everyone who was on campus to leave or barricade themselves inside a room.

Videos emerging from the scene show people jumping out of the windows and also an armed person dressed in black, wearing a helmet making their way across the campus.

Speaking about the attack, the Indian Embassy in Russia expressed shock and said, "Shocked at horrific attack at Perm State University in Russia; our deep condolences for loss of life and best wishes for early recovery of those injured. Embassy in touch with local authorities, representatives of Indian students. All Indian students safe," news agency ANI reported.
