5 Fast Facts: 2016 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer, which debuted in 1991, heralded the SUV movement. America’s best-selling midsize SUV, the Explorer shares a car-based platform with the Taurus and Flex. For 2016, the Explorer receives a refresh—redone liftgate, fascias, hood, grille, and fenders. New engine options, wheel designs, colors, and upscale Platinum trim are also introduced. Ford’s Sync 3 will arrive on 2017 Explorers.

If you are looking for a midsize SUV that seats 7, here are five fast facts about the 2016 Ford Explorer:

1) Trim levels start with the basic Explorer and move to XLT, Limited, Sport, and new Platinum in standard front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional all-wheel drive (AWD), which is standard on Explorer Sport and Platinum. Sport trim adds an EcoBoost V-6 engine, tuned suspension, and 20-in. wheels. The Explorer Platinum rides on 20-in. wheels and gets satin chrome trim, unique grille, and a moonroof, with quilted leather upholstery, aluminum accents, and wood trim on the inside.
2) The base Explorer comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque. Explorer Sport and Platinum are equipped with an EcoBoost turbocharged, 3.5-liter V-6 motor that generates 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. An efficient, EcoBoost turbocharged, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 280 horsepower is optional with 4WD Explorers.
3) EPA fuel-economy ratings average 28 mpg highway when powered by the EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine. Cargo capacity expands to 43.8 cu. ft. when the third row is folded down.
4) Available driver-assistance systems for the 2016 Explorer include adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with brake support, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alert, and active park assist. Curve control is standard.
5) Explorers can tow up to 5,000 lbs. with the standard or turbocharged V-6. Hill-start assist and a trailer sway control feature are integrated with roll stability control, which adjusts engine speed and applies the brakes when needed.
