    The Chevy Volt may not have the cache of an all-electric Tesla Model S or hybrid credentials of the Toyota Prius, but it is an efficient, trustworthy plug-in electric compact car that is available in 11 states. The first-generation Volt debuted in 2011, while the all-new 2016 Volt hatchback with a larger interior that can seat 4 has hybrid power system upgrades.

    1) Exterior styling is sleeker and modern with a retuned suspension. Inside, there’s an improved, easier-to-use dashboard with a larger 8.2-in. touch-screen infotainment center. Two trim levels are LT and Premier, the latter including a Bose audio system and leather seats. Eight exterior paint choices and five cloth and leather upholstery schemes are available.

    2) The 2016 Volt gets a 25% boost in all-electric range and can lap 53 miles before requiring a recharge, according to Chevrolet. With a full charge and a full tank of gas, range increases to a less-road-anxious 420 miles, Chevy says. A new, lighter-weight, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine that runs on regular unleaded fuel collaborates with 2 electric motors powered by an 18.4-kWh Lithium-ion battery to achieve better acceleration than the prior Volt, the automaker says. The new Volt can push 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds, Chevy claims.

    3) Two optional Driver Confidence packages add advanced driver-assistance systems, including blind-spot detection and lane-change warning plus rear cross-traffic alert. Forward-collision alert and automated headlights are part of the Confidence Package II. Chevrolet also offers Comfort packages for the LT that include heated seats and steering wheel.

    4) The Volt recharges in 13 hours with a 120-volt portable cord and is ready in 4.5 hours with an installed 240-volt charger, according to Chevrolet. The car is tech savvy and compatible with smartphones through the Volt’s MyLink display, which also makes calls, accesses navigation, and selects music or radio stations.
