2019 Audi TT 20 Years Edition Looks Back at the Start of It All

From Car and Driver

It has been 20 years since Audi launched its radical-looking TT. Conceived in 1994 by a group of predominantly German and American designers, the model made its debut in the form of two concept cars in 1995. It entered production as a coupe in 1998, followed by the roadster one year later.

To commemorate its history, Audi is now rolling out a limited-edition model called TT 20 Years. A total of 999 units will be sold globally, with the U.S. getting just 40 roadsters and 40 coupes.

Based on the standard TT coupe and roadster, they come with a number of enhancements that emulate the style of the early TT models-although not in every aspect. For instance, the 20 Years edition comes with quattro all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch automatic transmission only.

Outside, the commemorative edition’s shiny, metallic 19-inch wheels mirror the style and surface of the alloys often seen on the first-gen TT roadster. The tailpipes also feature a special polished design. There are matte Audi rings on the flanks, right in front of the rear wheel openings, while the attention-grabbing OLED taillights are taken from the TT RS.

Inside, the special edition is fitted with Mocassin Brown seats and steering wheel, and there is leather band wrapped around the seats, fixed with a cross-stitched yellow thread. This design is a nod to the “baseball glove” interior of the TTS roadster concept, which was later offered on first-gen roadster production cars as an expensive option.

The two available paint colors are yet another historical touch: the lighter Pfeilgrau (Arrow Gray) and the darker Nanograu (Nano Gray). Pfeilgrau was a favorite color of Ulrich Hackenberg, who was then responsible for technical development for Audi. We are told that Martin Winterkorn liked to tease Hackenberg about it, derisively calling the color “primer.” Nanograu is a nod to the Nimbus Gray color previously seen on TT roadsters. If you want yours to be an accurate mirror of history, order your anniversary-edition coupe in Arrow Gray or your roadster in Nano Gray.

And there’s one more thing we like: Audi promises that the plaque inside every 20 Years edition model will show the actual series number, making each one truly unique, instead of a lame and lazy “1 of 999.” Kudos for treating an icon right!
