At the end of the day, aren’t we all just looking for someone who will love us for who we are, enjoy sports with us and maybe introduce us to a sport we have not previously enjoyed? This gold standard of relationship criteria isn’t something all of us can meet, but some athletes seemingly have romance all figured out. Let’s take a look at 2019’s hottest sports power couples — and although some of these athletic stars have retired, their love is still going strong.
Zach and Julie Ertz
Zach Ertz and Julie Johnston met at a Stanford baseball game while in college in 2012. Zach played football for Stanford and Julie played soccer for nearby Santa Clara University. The couple married in March 2017, and since then, they’ve continued their sporting dominance. Zach won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018, and just one year later, Julie was a member of the United States’ World Cup-winning team.
Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird
Though both Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe play professionally in the Seattle area, they only began dating three years ago after meeting at a 2016 Summer Olympics press event. Rapinoe is coming off of another World Cup championship but is also the captain of Reign FC, a member of the nine-team National Women’s Soccer League. Bird plays for the Seattle Storm, a WNBA team that she’s helped lead to three championships.
J.J. Watt and Kealia Ohai
J.J. Watt and Kealia Ohai had been dating for three years when they got engaged this past spring. Watt is a five-time All-Pro defensive end for the Houston Texans, and Ohai is the captain of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Houston Dash. The couple met through Watt’s former teammate, Brian Cushing, who is married to Ohai’s sister, Megan.
Alex Morgan and Servando Carrasco
This all-soccer power couple met while both were student-athletes at the University of California, Berkeley. Servando Carrasco plays midfield for the Los Angeles Galaxy and is in the ninth year of his Major League Soccer career. Alex Morgan has won back-to-back World Cup titles with the U.S. women’s soccer team to go with a gold medal from the 2012 Olympics. The couple married on New Year’s Eve in 2014.
Caroline Wozniacki and David Lee
Two-time All-Star David Lee played 12 seasons in the NBA before becoming engaged to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in November 2017. The couple married in Italy in June 2019, with tennis star Serena Williams serving as a bridesmaid. While Lee is retired, Wozniacki won the Australian Open in 2018 and currently is ranked 19th in the world.
P.K. Subban and Lindsey Vonn
Though she’s now retired, Lindsey Vonn is a three-time Olympic medalist, including one gold. She met 10-year NHL defenseman P.K. Subban at the 2017 ESPY Awards, but the pair didn’t begin dating until the following spring. A three-time All-Star and a Norris Trophy winner, Subban recently was traded from the Nashville Predators to the New Jersey Devils.
Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton
Olympic track and field medalists Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen met while attending the University of Oregon. They married in July 2013 and both announced their retirement from their sports at the same time in January 2017. However, both did so after succeeding at the highest level. Ashton won two gold medals in the decathlon for the United States in the 2012 and 2016 games, while Brianne won bronze for Canada in 2016 in the heptathlon.
Dom Dwyer and Sydney Leroux Dwyer
Soccer stars Dom Dwyer and Sydney Leroux Dwyer play for the MLS’ Orlando City Soccer Club and NWSL’s Orlando Pride, respectively. The couple married in January 2015, and as if playing for professional teams in the same city wasn’t enough, both have represented the United States on their respective national teams. They have a young son and welcomed a daughter in June.
Aaron Rodgers and Danica Patrick
Danica Patrick retired from auto racing after 2018’s Indianapolis 500 but did so only after becoming the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, however, is still playing, and the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player is starting his 15th season with the Green Bay Packers. Simone Biles and Stacey Ervin
Simone Biles took home five medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics, including four golds. Stacey Ervin was a gymnast in college at the University of Michigan, but he and Biles didn’t find each other until he returned to gymnastics to coach in 2017. Recently, Ervin had a brief stint in professional wrestling with the WWE, part of the NXT tag team with Humberto Carrillo. An injury, however, forced him to retire after only eight months with the organization.
Casey Jennings and Kerri Walsh Jennings
In 2001, while both chasing the dream of playing professional beach volleyball, Casey Jennings and then-Kerri Walsh met (and scrimmaged) in Huntington Beach, California. They married in 2004, and while both would play volleyball professionally, it was Kerri, alongside teammate Misty May-Treanor, who became a household name in the sport. She won three Olympic gold medals with May-Treanor and a bronze medal with her subsequent teammate, April Ross.
Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore
Soccer player Jozy Altidore and tennis star Sloane Stephens were childhood friends who became reacquainted and started dating in 2016. Altidore began his Major League Soccer career in 2006 and plays for Toronto FC. Stephens won the 2017 U.S. Open and is ranked No. 10 in the world. The couple became engaged in April 2019.
Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf
Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf were the first tennis players to win all four Grand Slam tournaments and a gold medal in singles competition in the Olympics. Jrue currently plays for the New Orleans Pelicans, while Lauren has won two Olympic gold medals that go with a World Cup title from 2015. Their daughter was born in 2016.
DeWanna Bonner and Candice Dupree
DeWanna Bonner and Candice Dupree played together for the Phoenix Mercury from 2010-16. They were married in November 2016 and had twins in 2017. Bonner still plays for the Mercury, while Dupree is a forward for the Indiana Fever. The couple has 10 All-Star seasons between them.
Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm
This cross-sports power couple married in 2003 when Nomar Garciaparra was still playing shortstop for the Boston Red Sox and Mia Hamm was a summer away from her second Olympic gold medal in soccer in 2004. The six-time All-Star and two-time World Cup champion have twin daughters as well as a son.

Kristi Yamaguchi won gold at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, and at the opening ceremony, she met her future husband, professional hockey player Bret Hedican. While Yamaguchi never competed in another Olympics, Hedican’s career was just beginning in 1992, and he played 17 seasons as an NHL defenseman. The two were married in 2000 and have two daughters.
Penny Taylor and Diana Taurasi
Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor were teammates from 2004-16. Taylor retired that year and now is an assistant coach with the Mercury. The couple married before the 2017 WNBA season, and in March 2018, they welcomed their first child, Leo Michael Taurasi-Taylor.
Graham Rahal and Courtney Force
NHRA 12-time Funny Car champion Courtney Force and IndyCar Series racer Graham Rahal began dating in 2013 and immediately found a lot in common — both drivers raced for teams owned by their legendary racing fathers. The couple married in November 2015 and while Rahal is still active, Force “stepped away” from racing in January 2019 but hasn’t closed the door on returning.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ana Ivanovic
German soccer superstar Bastian Schweinsteiger and Serbian tennis champion Ana Ivanovic began their relationship in 2014. That year, Schweinsteiger captained Germany to a World Cup victory, a triumph perhaps as sweet as Ivanovic’s 2008 French Open win. The couple married in Venice, Italy, in 2016 and welcomed a baby boy in March 2018. Schweinsteiger now plays with MLS’ Chicago Fire.
Brady Quinn and Alicia Sacramone Quinn
Now both retired, former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and U.S. gymnast Alicia Sacramone Quinn married in March 2014. Brady played four NFL seasons and now is a FOX Sports analyst. Alicia won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The couple welcomed their second daughter in July 2018.
A.J. Feeley and Heather Mitts
Quarterback A.J. Feeley was a career backup in the NFL over six seasons. Heather Mitts played soccer professionally in the now-defunct Women’s Professional Soccer league, as well as with the U.S. Women’s National Team, netting three Olympic gold medals. The couple married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2010. They have three children.
Roger and Mirka Federer
This tennis power couple met while both representing Switzerland at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The couple married in 2009, and the Federers are parents of two sets of twins.
