Fast Facts:

  • Restyled version of Ram’s off-road-ready model

  • Tradesman or Power Wagon trim

  • Power Wagon adopts Rebel-style design cues, inside and out

  • Split off from 2500 Heavy Duty series as a separate model

  • On sale in fall 2016

Introduction
With the introduction of the 2017 Ram Power Wagon at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, the specialized 4-wheel-drive (4WD) truck is split off from the 2500 Heavy Duty lineup and becomes a unique model in the Ram Truck lineup.

Based on the 2500 Heavy Duty Crew Cab, the Power Wagon is equipped as seen in Chicago, or it can be outfitted with a less expensive yet equally capable Tradesman trim. The new Ram Power Wagon goes on sale at the end of 2016.

Exterior Features
Skip the Tradesman model, which adopts the basic appearance of other Tradesman-level Ram trucks, and the new Power Wagon features bold design elements similar to the Ram 1500 Rebel.

As seen in Chicago, the Power Wagon’s updated appearance includes a new blacked-out grille with silver oversized “RAM” lettering, projector-beam headlights with black bezels and LED marker lights, a black graphic on the vent-stamped hood, and a black powder-coated bumper. A 12,000-lb. electric winch is standard, mounted behind the front bumper and equipped with 125 feet of line.

Around back, the tailgate features oversized “RAM” and “POWER WAGON” lettering in black, black bezel taillights, and a black powder-coated bumper. The Power Wagon’s fender trim is also black, and the truck rides on new 17-in. forged-aluminum wheels finished in silver and matte black. They’re wrapped in new 33-in. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires and feature exposed lug nuts.

Paint colors include white, red, silver, blue, gray, and black. A 2-tone paint treatment with lower black body paint is available, as is a graphic package hearkening back to the Macho Power Wagon of 1979 and 1980.

Interior Features

Inside, the Power Wagon features Diesel Gray and Black seating with tire tread pattern inserts, Iron Gray painted trim, satin chrome detailing, a black headliner, and rubber all-weather floor mats, all similar to the Rebel 1500 model. In Tradesman trim, the Power Wagon has plain, standard-issue cabin fittings.

Optional Features
Among the numerous options for the 2017 Ram Power Wagon, highlights include RamBox locking bed storage containers, locking tailgate, spray-in bed liner, LED bed lighting, and a tri-fold tonneau cover. Available interior upgrades include leather seats with Slate Gray exposed stitching, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, and ambient cabin lighting. Front and rear park-assist sensors, power-adjustable pedals, and remote engine starting are also available for the Power Wagon.

Under the Hood
All Power Wagons have a 6.4-liter V-8 engine generating 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 429 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission feeds the power to the truck’s part-time 4WD system, and cylinder-deactivation technology attempts to conserve as much fuel as is possible. Ram says the Power Wagon can haul up to 1,510 lbs. of payload and can tow up to 10,030 lbs. of trailer weight.

Front and rear locking differentials are standard equipment, as well as skid plates for the transfer case and the fuel tank. The Power Wagon also benefits from a 2-in. suspension lift, and an Articulink front suspension design features a sway bar disconnect system. It works at speeds below 18 mph, providing additional axle articulation for extreme off-roading maneuvers.

Hill-descent control is also standard, activated using buttons on the transmission’s column shifter. When driven in 4-Lo, the Power Wagon’s throttle response is softer and engine idle speed increases by 100 rpm to bring added control when navigating difficult terrain, Ram says.

According to Ram, the Power Wagon boasts:

  • 14.3 inches of ground clearance

  • 33.6-degree approach angle

  • 23.5-degree breakover angle

  • 26.2-degree departure angle

  • 30 inches of water fording capability

Safety
In addition to a reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors, which help to make this huge truck easier to maneuver no matter the driving situation, the Power Wagon comes with a Uconnect infotainment system featuring Uconnect Access subscription services. Through this technology, Power Wagon owners can access 911 Call service, which is an automatic collision-notification system that can provide emergency responders with the truck’s exact location following a crash.

Technology
Uconnect Access service also delivers Internet radio to the Power Wagon’s cabin, as well as a Wi-Fi connection, stolen-vehicle recovery, and voice-texting capability. Additionally, the Power Wagon is equipped with a 7-in. driver-information display, and a cargo-view camera is available, allowing the driver to monitor bed loads without turning around and looking or checking the truck’s mirrors. A navigation system is an upgrade.
