2017 Dodge Challenger GT Arrives as AWD Muscle Car

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Dodge brand is expanding its Challenger midsize sporty car lineup to appeal to car enthusiasts in regions of the country with mountains, snow, ice, and sleet by introducing an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant. The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT AWD 2-door muscle car will have a starting list price of $34,490 (including destination fee) when it reaches dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2017.

The car’s AWD system is the same as the one used in the high-performance 4-door Dodge Charger AWD with active transfer case and front-axle disconnect, so it will automatically transition between rear-wheel drive (RWD) and AWD. In normal driving conditions, the front axle is disengaged and the engine’s torque is directed to the rear wheels for a performance driving experience, Dodge says. When additional traction is needed, sensors engage the front axle to change into AWD.

The 2017 Challenger GT AWD is powered by Dodge’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that generates 305 horsepower and 268 lb.-ft. of torque when partnered with the standard 8-speed automatic transmission. With this powertrain and AWD system the all-weather muscle car averages an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway.

The Challenger GT AWD’s driving experience includes paddle shifters and a sport mode, where gear changes are quicker and revs are higher for responsive acceleration and higher shift points, according to Dodge. The car’s infotainment center screen also allows the driver to view gear selection. A GT Super Track Pak activates visual performance information, G-force indicator, and lap times for driving buffs.

The 2017 Challenger GT AWD rides on 19-in. aluminum wheels finished in Hyper Black and includes all-season tires, projector fog lamps, deck-lid rear spoiler, rear park-assist technology, and a reversing camera. The interior features premium Nappa leather heated/ventilated power-adjustable front seats, heated steering wheel, and a Uconnect system with 8.4-in. display that has smartphone connectivity plus an Alpine audio system. In addition, a new GT Interior package is available with sporty higher-end leather and Alcantara sport seats and a higher-end 9-speaker sound system.
