Introduction
In conjunction with the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, Chevrolet has announced the 2017 Camaro 1LE Coupe, which is equipped with an option package that installs numerous performance upgrades. Available for the Camaro 1LT and 2LT with a V-6 engine and for the Camaro 1SS and 2SS, the new 1LE option package will be available in late 2016.

Exterior Features
Chevrolet makes it easy to identify the Camaro 1LE at a glance, thanks to a satin black finish on the hood, side mirrors, and 3-piece rear spoiler. Satin black also covers the front splitter for LT 1LE models, while the SS 1LE variants have a satin graphite finish on this piece and covering the rear diffuser panel.

Designed to increase downforce at speed, the front splitter and rear spoiler are functional rather than cosmetic. High-flow upper and lower grille inlets help to keep mechanical componentry cool, and both cars have unique, lightweight, forged-aluminum wheels.

Note that the Camaro LT 1LE in Chevrolet’s promotional photo wears a conceptual green paint color that was not yet approved for production when this preview was written.

Interior Features
Aside from a sueded steering wheel wrap and standard Recaro performance seats for the SS 1LE, the interior is the same as a standard-issue Camaro. The 1LT and 1SS models have cloth upholstery, while the 2LT and 2SS models get leather and a Bose premium sound system. Likely, the 1LE package will be offered solely with a black interior color.

Optional Features
In addition to optional Recaro performance seats for the LT 1LE, all versions of the Camaro equipped with the 1LE package can be fitted with a performance data recorder. Using this technology, owners can record and review performance metrics. Previously, this feature was reserved for the Corvette.

Using an SD card reader inside of the glove box, the performance data recorder captures audio, video, and data related to acceleration, braking, and handling. The system uses a 720p high-definition camera, an in-cabin microphone, a telemetry recorder, and 5-Hz GPS receiver to provide a driver’s point-of-view recording that can be downloaded, edited, and posted to social media platforms for viewing. The driver can also view a recording right on the car’s infotainment display.

Four different modes are available: Tour, Sport, Performance, and Track. Recordings are tailored specifically for each mode. A valet mode records use of the car when someone else is behind the wheel, locking the glove box so that the SD card cannot be removed.

Under the Hood
Chevrolet says that the Camaro’s 1LE option package was developed to turn the car into “the most track-capable sports coupe in its price class.” Package components are different depending on which Camaro you buy.

Install the 1LE package on a 2017 Camaro LT with a V-6 engine and Chevrolet promises that the curb weight does not exceed 3,500 lbs. The relatively light result means that racetrack lap times are comparable to the previous-generation Camaro SS, according to Chevy.

A 6-speed manual gearbox with a short-throw shifter is bolted to the Camaro LT’s optional 335-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. To this, the 1LE package adds a mechanical limited-slip rear differential with a 3.27 ratio, dual-mode exhaust system, the suspension and fuel system from the Camaro SS, Brembo 4-piston front brake calipers, and coolers for the engine oil, differential, and transmission. The Camaro LT 1LE sits on 20-in. forged-aluminum wheels wrapped in 245/40 front and 275/35 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.

Equipped with a 455-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 2017 Camaro SS 1LE features an electronic limited-slip rear differential with a 3.73 ratio, dual-mode exhaust system, and a Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension system.

Brembo 6-piston monobloc front calipers clamp 2-piece, 14.6-in. rotors and the SS 1LE also has 2-piston rear calipers. Front and rear, the calipers are painted red and feature the 1LE logo and are tucked behind specific 20-in. forged-aluminum wheels wearing Z-rated 285/30 front and 305/30 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. The tires feature Camaro-specific compound and construction.

For the Camaro SS 1LE, Chevrolet promises lateral acceleration exceeding 1.0g and claims that this version of the car is a full 3 seconds faster around the Big Willow course at Willow Springs Raceway when compared to a standard Camaro SS.

Safety
Chevrolet equips every Camaro with OnStar subscription services, which is free during a trial period following vehicle purchase but requires a paid subscription thereafter. Among OnStar’s many features, automatic crash-response service automatically helps to speed rescuers to the scene following a collision. The Camaro is also available with a blind-spot warning system, lane-change assist system, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Technology
A Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is standard for the Camaro, equipped with an 8-in. touch-screen display and Apple CarPlay smartphone-projection technology. Android Auto is coming soon and should be available by the time the Camaro 1LE Coupe is on sale.

Navigation is an option for this system. Additionally, the Camaro can be fitted with wireless-device charging, head-up display, and rear park-assist sensors.
