2016-2017 MINI Clubman recalled for airbag problems

MINI is recalling more than 7,800 MINI Clubman vehicles from the 2016 and 2017 model years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, those vehicles contain side curtain airbags that may not deploy properly during collisions.

As NHTSA documents explain, the Clubman's airbags are wrapped in fabric that's been perforated to help them inflate correctly. Unfortunately, the tests have shown that the fabric can affect the bags' deployment, moving them out of their expected positions. That, in turn, can increase the risk of injury to occupants.

It's important to note that these airbags weren't manufactured by Takata--which could create an entirely different set of problems. Rather, they were supplied by Autoliv.

The recall is limited to 2016-2017 MINI Clubman vehicles built between August 19, 2015 and July 14, 2016. BMW estimates that 7,810 vehicles in the U.S. are affected.

BMW expects to mail recall notices to owners by September 12. At that time, owners will be able to take their Clubman vehicles to MINI dealers, who will modify the covers on the driver and passenger side curtain airbags at no charge.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #16V553000.
