2015 Volkswagen e-Golf Electric Car Gets Less Expensive Trim Level

When pricing for the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf electric car was announced last August, only one trim level was available, a lavishly equipped top-of-the-range package.

Now VW has supplemented that SEL Premium version of the e-Golf with a new, less expensive model called the Limited Edition, at a price almost $2,000 lower.

The 2015 VW e-Golf Limited Edition will carry a suggested retail price of $33,450, plus a mandatory $820 delivery fee, bringing the total to a starting point of $34,270.

That compares to a starting price of $36,265 for the e-Golf SEL Premium model, also including delivery.

A 24.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack powers an electric motor rated at 85 kilowatts (115 horsepower) that drives the front wheels. Its torque is quoted at 199 lb-ft.

The e-Golf's onboard charger operates at up to 7.2 kilowatts when using a 240-Volt Level 2 charging station.

Every U.S. model of the e-Golf also includes a standard DC fast-charging port.

The changes are largely limited to trim and appearance items, with one notable exception.

Volkswagen fits the Limited Edition model with 16-inch steel wheels, rather than the SEL Premium's 16-inch "Astona" alloy wheels, though the low-rolling-resistance tires remain.

The higher-priced model's LED headlights are replaced with halogen units, and interior upholstery is cloth rather than leatherette.

The one major change is the deletion of Volkswagen's heat-pump heating and cooling system, a more energy-efficient way to keep the cabin temperature close to its desired level.

The more traditional electric air-conditioning unit and resistance heating use more battery energy.

That means that buyers in cold climates should think carefully about whether the heat pump may be a "necessary" option for their e-Golf.

The new version of the Volkswagen e-Golf is also being offered at a lease price of $229.

That compares to a standard $299 monthly lease payment on the existing e-Golf SEL Premium model.

During the four months that the VW e-Golf has been on sale in the U.S., Volkswagen has delivered 668 units of the compact electric car.
