2015-2016 Jeep Renegade recalled for trailer hitch glitch

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling select 2015 and 2016 Jeep Renegade crossovers to fix a problem with their trailer hitches. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 8,561 vehicles registered in the U.S.

NHTSA documents explain that the Renegade's trailer hitch assembly was manufactured with only one fastener per side, not the three that are required. As a result, the vehicle's tow bar may separate from the Renegade, along with anything that's being towed. FCA says that before that happens owners may notice a rattling sound coming from the tow bar area while driving.

The recall is limited to 2015-2016 Jeep Renegade vehicles built between August 25, 2014 and June 25, 2016, and as you might expect, it only affects models that came equipped with the optional, factory-installed trailer hitch package.

FCA will mail recall notices to owners, asking them to take their Renegade vehicles to dealerships for service. Dealers will install the two missing fasteners on each side of the trailer hitch assembly at no charge. (If you've already paid to have this problem repaired and you've kept your receipt, FCA will reimburse you.)

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and ask about recall S62. If you prefer, you can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and inquire about safety campaign #16V545000.
