Located in Michigan, the International Academy is one school with three campuses. Students follow an International Baccalaureate curriculum that offers specialized programs for underclassmen and their older counterparts.

8. School of Science and Engineering Magnet

This Texas school focuses on preparing its students to compete globally in science and engineering. Students at SEM can take accelerated classes in science, English, math and computer science, allowing them to move at their own pace.

7. University High School

University High School is a college preparatory school in Arizona. All academic courses at UHS are either honors level or Advanced Placement.

6. Pine View School

Pine View School is the only full-time public school for gifted students in Florida. Students are admitted based on a series of tests, recommendations and other data, according to the school's website. Students can be referred to the school by parents, teachers and administrators.

5. BASIS Tucson North

In Arizona, students at BASIS Tucson North can graduate after three years or stay an additional year to complete capstone courses or a student project. The charter school offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses in subjects varying from calculus to music theory. Students must take at least six AP exams to graduate.

4. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

Located in Virginia, TJHSST offers a STEM-focused curriculum and houses 14 specialized research labs, including astrophysics, microelectronics and oceanography.

3. Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology

GSMST serves as one of several STEM options for students within Georgia's Gwinnett County Public Schools system. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement course work and exams.

BASIS Scottsdale is one of 11 BASIS charter schools located in Arizona. The high school, which opened in 2007, offers a variety of honors and Advanced Placement courses for students.
