2013-2016 Fiat 500e recalled for software glitch

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 2013-2016 models of the Fiat 500e electric car to fix a software glitch. According to the automaker, more than 16,000 vehicles in the U.S. are affected.

In a brief press release, FCA says that "A routine component check by FCA US discovered certain vehicles are equipped with software that may misread operating conditions and shut down propulsion". Depending on when and where such a shut-down occurred, it could dramatically increase the risk of a crash--though it's important to note that FCA hasn't yet received any reports of injuries or collisions linked to the problem.

The recall affects 16,549 vehicles registered in the U.S. Owners of those vehicles will soon receive a recall notice by mail, instructing them to take their cars to a Fiat dealership for service. Dealers will upgrade the 500e's software to resolve the issue, and the fix will be carried out at no charge to owners.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.
