A large, 33.5-ton aquarium has burst at shopping centre in Shanghai, China, leaving 15 people injured.

Passers-by were injured when the glass front of the seven metre-long, three metre-high aquarium, which was home to a number of sharks, burst.

Eight of the injured were believed to be customers while the rest were shop assistants and security staff, with most injured by shards of thick security glass.

The aquarium was only built about two years ago, and has been an attraction for visitors, who flocked to watch divers feed the sharks.

According to Rex Features, a vendor selling shoes outside the shopping centre said, "It was horrible, like a bomb explosion. Some pedestrians were pushed two metres away by the force of the water."

Unfortunately, three lemon sharks and dozens of smaller fish and turtles died in the incident, which left the entrance to the Dongfang shopping mall flooded and covered in glass.

Local police said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
