2006-2014 Subaru Tribeca Recalled For Hood Latch Problem
Subaru is recalling approximately 77,000 Tribeca crossovers from the 2006-2014 model years. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the hood latches on some of those vehicles may be prone to opening while the car is in motion.
The problem has been linked to a faulty hood latch assembly manufactured by Johnan America, based in Kentucky. The assembly consists of a hood lock system and a hood safety system, both of which can be prone to rusting or grease build-up, causing the springs in the two systems to fail. If they should fail at the same time, the hood can pop open unexpectedly, potentially causing serious issues for drivers.

NHTSA knows of one incident involving a 2006 Tribeca in which the hood allegedly opened while the car was moving. After inspecting the vehicle, Subaru decided to recall all Tribeca crossovers equipped with the faulty assembly.
Unfortunately, Subaru doesn't have enough parts on hand to carry out a complete recall at this time. Instead, the recall will happen in two phases: in phase one, owners will receive an interim recall notification, asking them to take their Tribecas to Subaru dealers for service. Dealers will inspect the assembly, clean it, and lubricate it to ensure that it's working properly. If it's not, dealers will install one of the limited number of replacement assemblies available.

Phase two will involve a full replacement of the hood latch assembly.
