2006-2011 Toyota RAV4, 2010 Lexus HS 250h recalled for suspension issue (again): 337,000 affected

Toyota is recalling more than 337,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles to fix a fairly serious problem with their suspensions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall is limited to the 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 crossover and the 2010 Lexus HS 250h sedan.

The problem with those vehicles is that the lock nuts on their rear suspension arms (aka tie rods) may not have been properly tightened. As a result, they may be too loose, allowing the threading to rust and the suspension arms to fail. If that happens on the road, a driver may have a tough time controlling the vehicle, which could dramatically increase the risk of a crash.

If that sounds familiar to some of you, there's a good reason: the RAV4 and the HS 250h were recalled for the same problem in 2012. In the lead-up to that recall, four motorists said that they'd lost control of their vehicles, and nine collisions had been linked to the problem. Three injuries were reported in those incidents.

Unfortunately, during the previous recall, Toyota's remedy didn't include replacement of the suspension arms. Instead, dealers only inspected and sealed them. During this recall, both rear suspension arms will be replaced, and the lock nuts will be sealed.

The recall is limited to specific manufacturing dates:

  • 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles built between October 31, 2005 and September 7, 2010

  • 2010 Lexus HS 250h vehicles built between July 6, 2009 and August 26, 2010

NHTSA reports that 337,449 vehicles registered in the U.S. are affected.

Toyota plans to mail recall notices to owners of those vehicles no later than September 30. If you're an owner and have questions in the meantime, you're encouraged to contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and ask about recall G0V (for the RAV4) or GLK (for the HS 250h). You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #16V596000.
