911 callers describe fatal shooting of 19-year-old outside Food Lion in Raleigh

A 19-year-old man walking out of a grocery store Monday night was shot and killed, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

The fatal shooting occurred just after 10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Poole Road in Raleigh, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Officers arriving on scene found Trashawn Watkins suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died, the department said.

Donna-maria Harris, a spokeswoman for Raleigh police, said the shooting happened as Watkins left a Food Lion grocery store.

Watkins was a Raleigh resident and worked at McDonald’s, according to a copy of the incident report obtained by The News & Observer.

Harris declined to comment on whether a suspect or motive had been identified, stating the investigation was ongoing.

911 callers describe shooting

The shooting was reported by two 911 callers, one of whom was with Watkins, according to recordings released by Raleigh police.

In the first call, a frantic voice says Watkins was shot in the chest.

“He’s not breathing. Please, please, please,” the caller said. “Stay with me, please.”

The second caller described hearing five or six gunshots while waiting for food at the McDonald’s across the street.

“I’m pretty sure with that many shots, somebody over there needs help,” they said.

The shooting was one of at least two that occurred in Raleigh Monday night.

A man was also shot on the corner of Russ Street and Poole Road just before 8 p.m., Raleigh police said. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The department has not released any further information about the earlier shooting.
