10 Marine-Based Beauty Products Packed With Skin-Loving Ingredients From the Ocean

Fun fact: Anywhere from 50 to 80 percent of all life on Earth is found in the ocean. And while humans have only explored a tiny percent of all of that plant and animal life, much of what we have found are things that can be extremely beneficial for your skin. Point being, there's good reason why blue beauty is trending and so many skincare products tout ocean-derived ingredients. There are a few heavy-hitters that are very often used, seaweed being one of the most common. "It contains iodine as well as many beneficial minerals that help to detoxify tissue," explains Elina Feodotova, a cosmetic chemist, celebrity esthetician, and owner of Elina Organics Spas.

Another popular ingredient? Seawater pearl, which is often used as a powder. It's rich in proteins and amino acids, ideal for brightening and smoothing the skin, as well as for retaining moisture and offering overall anti-aging benefits, explains Fedotova. Spirulina—yes, as in the stuff you'd add to a smoothie—is also a good ingredient to seek out. "It's another natural source of amino acids and proteins that help build collagen, and it also detoxifies and calms the skin, as well as contains essential vitamins and minerals," she says.

We could go on and on, but instead, we'll just share a list of 10 of the best skincare products that rely on the ocean's bounty to do great things for your skin.

Mara Algae Retinol Face Oil

There's no shortage of active ingredients to be found in this hydrating, youth-boosting oil. Per the name, a 1.2 percent concentration of wrinkle-fighting retinol is combined with algae extract, loaded with nutrients that help replenish lost moisture and also plump the skin. Antioxidant-rich green tea and another ocean-derived ingredient, brown seaweed (packed with powerful phytonutrients) round out the list. Also nice: The formula is completely clean, and free of synthetic fragrance, dyes, parabens, and more.

Osea Sea Minerals Mist

A quick spritz of this is ideal whenever your complexion needs a quick pick-me-up. It's basically like a little bottle of ocean water, filled with naturally antibacterial sea salt and mineral-rich seaweed. Added aloe ensures the final formula is refreshing and hydrating; try stashing it in the fridge so that it's nice and cool and feels even better going on.

GLAYCO Amber Extract Eye Cream

This eye cream relies on ocean water, but not any old ocean water. It uses glacial marine mineral water sourced from Canada's Pacific Northwest, rich in silt that contains, wait for it, 69 different minerals that do everything from hydrate to heal skin. In this multitasking eye cream, it's combined with antioxidant-rich amber extract, vitamin C, and bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol that's equally as effective at fighting fine lines, but doesn't come with the potential for irritating side effects. The final formula is ideal for addressing any and all of your eye-related issues, including puffiness, crows' feet, and dark circles.

Spa Technologies Revitalizing Sea Cleanse

This brand has been harnessing the power of the ocean for decades and this cleanser is one of their best-sellers. The star of the show is organic laminaria algae, known for helping to both soothe sensitive skin and help balance out oil production, making it a nice choice for those with oily or congested skin. Bonus points for the fresh and earthy scent, which is completely naturally-derived.

Volition Oceanene Youth-Boost Gel Cream

Those who prefer moisturizers that are more lightweight will love the texture of this gel-cream hybrid. It soaks in lightning fast and never feels greasy or heavy, though still imparts plenty of moisture (thanks to the use of hyaluronic acid and aloe). The marine algae in the formula is full of protective antioxidants, and the addition of vitamins C and E further ups that protective ante.

Elina Organics Mermaid Elixir

Fedotova relies on plenty of ocean-based ingredients in her eponymous skincare line. Case in point: This moisturizer, which both has a very cute name and is loaded with all kinds of sea-derived goodies. We're talking that seawater pearl powder and spirulina we mentioned earlier, as well as marine collagen peptides, which help to firm and tighten skin. Plus, the ingredients are specially encapsulated in liposomes to ensure maximum penetration into the skin.

Masktini Twilight Zone

Reach for this mask anytime your skin needs a little extra detoxifying boost. Purifying bamboo charcoal powder is paired with gently exfoliating Tahitian black pearl powder, pulling out impurities lodged deep in pores while simultaneously buffing off dead skin cells to leave your complexion fresh and glowing. Using it is super enjoyable, too—it both foams up a little and warms up as you massage it into skin, making for a delightful sensorial experience.

Algenist Blue Algae Vitamin C Brightening Serum

This serum's tell-tale blue hue comes from spirulina (the algae is a blue-green). In this formula, it's used for its incredibly high source of vitamin C, which is both a powerful antioxidant and collagen-booster, and a top ingredient for helping to fade dark spots. There's also a plant-derived marine ferment in the mix, rich in proteins that help bolster the skin.

BAWDY the Body Wash

Ocean-derived ingredients are good for the skin all over your body, not just your face. Exhibit A, this body wash, which relies on nutrient-rich seaweed and kaolin clay. But what's super unique about it is the power-to-foam formula; just mix the powder with a little bit of water to get a rich lather. Not only does the fact that it's water-free minimize its impact on the environment, but it also is totally non-toxic, so when you rinse it down the drain you can feel confident knowing that it won't have a negative effect on marine life.
