10 Jobs That Make it Hard to Cover Your Rent

Financial Stress: What You Can Do to Ease the Tension

Housing tends to take up the biggest chunk of everyone's budget, so you want that slice to be as small as possible. Cheap housing can be hard to find, so a lot of people end up writing more than they'd like on their monthly rent check. In fact, 20 million American workers, or 13.6% of the workforce, is rent-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of income on rent and utilities, according to a new report from Make Room, a housing advocacy group. Yet most of those people put in at least 35-hour workweeks.

Make Room analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data from 2005 through 2014, the most recent year for which data were available, and found this rent-burdened population has grown 22% in the last decade while the working population only grew 2%.

Spending more than 30% of income on rent and utilities may not sound exorbitant to New Yorkers and San Franciscans. But many financial planners and experts recommend putting no more than 25% toward those expenses. High rent can make it hard to save money, pay off debt or make ends meet, especially if an emergency or unexpected expense arises. Unfortunately, people in certain industries are more likely to be rent-burdened. Make Room compiled a list of occupations with the highest percentage of rent-burdened workers, who are often subject to low wages, unpredictable paychecks, seasonality and inconsistent hours.
