10 design gems from a jewel-toned Bengaluru apartment

When interior designer Vinithra Amarnathan met the homeowners of this 3BHK apartment in Bengaluru, she knew it was going to be one of the most fun projects her design firm Weespaces would work on.

“The project encouraged us to step foot into creative territories outside our design comfort zone; it allowed us to interact with elements of pop culture [that echo the clients’ love of Bollywood and cinema],” she elaborates. The result is a 1,760-square-foot home of happy contrasts.

Here, jewel tones are underscored by metallic tints, industrial-chic lines juxtaposed with period-style accessories, and straight-lined geometry offset by natural textures.

Scroll through to see how Weespaces pulled off a home interior design that’s bold yet understated, playful yet practical.

01. The clients' desire for a statement emerald green sofa shaped the design for the living area. "Blush, emerald, classic black and white, and metallic accents give this space a bold yet layered persona. The overall look is modern-chic," says Vinithra.

Note the use of jewel tones in the artwork as well.

02. The living room balcony serves as a mini observatory, embracing the outdoors above and underfoot. "We transformed the balcony niche into a bijou haven," says Vinithra. Create your personal greenscape (without the stress of maintenance) with an artificial grass carpet and plants. The trellis is space-friendly, while the gold mirror frame is in keeping with the overall jewel-toned theme. String lights set the mood after sunset.

03. This midnight blue crockery cum bar unit demarcates the living and dining areas in the open-plan space. Metallic-finished hardware, like the legs and handles on this sideboard, are a way to add understated sparkle to your home interiors.

Tip: Try a similar hardware makeover on existing furniture.

04. The dining area successfully blends warm and cool materials. The raw-edge, wooden dining tabletop is propped by angular metallic-black legs. Overhead, a metal chandelier adds to the edgy, industrial vibe. Softening this space are upholstered, grey dining chairs and a blush, Moroccan rug.

05. The utilities section is screened off from the kitchen with a trendy metal-and-fluted-glass barn door. It’s both, space-savvy and trendy. The custom kitchen cart in the foreground is built on wheels for flexible space utilisation.

06. Often-overlooked areas, like passageways and alcoves, are good spaces for gallery walls and concealed storage. (Left) The entryway passage holds aesthetic and functional pieces like a mirror and a cleverly concealed letterbox. (Right) The passage leading to the private spaces is turned into a gallery wall. A hemp, striped rug visually elongates an otherwise small hallway.

07. "The pièce de résistance in the master bedroom is the Roberto Cavalli Ferns wallpaper; the perfect backdrop to the gorgeous, ochre, upholstered queen bed," says Vinithra. The vertical stripes of the tufted headboard create the illusion of increased visual height.

08. The son’s bedroom has multi-functional furniture with ample storage and even a trundle bed for sleepovers. The superhero theme is executed via framed art and wall decals, both of which, are easy to replace in case its little inhabitant's preferences change.

09. Another view of the kid’s bedroom. Light-wood flooring and a white floor-to-ceiling wardrobe create a spacious look. The built-in, open shelving space adds a pop of colour to the composition.

10. "The guest bedroom has a neo-traditional sentiment to it," says Vinithra. The space is inspired by Mughal jaaliwork that's seen on the headboard, a customized puja unit and an art print.
