10 cars you have to wait for

MORE AT CNBC.COM

Nobody likes to wait. When people want something, they want it now. This is never more true than when the object in question is a sexy new product, one that has been the subject of mouthwatering, tantalizing ad campaigns, such as those frequently used for new cars.

New cars debut at auto shows well in advance of their street dates, giving enthusiasts months, sometimes years, to salivate over photos and to fantasize about when they can drive one off the lot. Needless to say, the longer the waiting period, the more desirable these cars become.

What follows is a list of 10 upcoming cars that you can’t buy yet, provided by Karl Brauer, CEO and editor-in-chief of TotalCarScore.com, an online review aggregator and information resource for cars on the market. According to Brauer, these cars will be worth the wait. In some cases, the cars are slated for release so far in the future that pictures don't yet exist, so we used the latest models available in those cases.

Read ahead and see which cars made TotalCarScore.com’s list of cars you have to wait for.

2013 SRT Viper

The Dodge Viper returns to the marketplace after a two-year absence. Now dubbed the SRT Viper, Brauer of TotalCarScore.com referred to it as “the newest product from Chrysler's newest, performance-oriented brand” in an email.

“With 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque from the V10 engine,” Brauer adds, “it will have a top speed of 206 mph (miles per hour) and hit 60 mph in around 3.5 seconds,” he said. “An updated chassis, suspension and interior make it the most refined Viper ever, all for a starting price just under $100,000.”

2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus

“From its LED lighting, front and rear, to its mid-mounted, 550 horsepower V10 engine, the top-of-the-performance-line R8 V10 Plus is lighter and quicker than the standard R8 V10,” Brauer said, adding that it will reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

“This is a track-ready ride with firmer suspension settings and less sound insulation, in the name of saving weight,” he said. “When it arrives in Audi showrooms next year it will cost about $185,000.”

NOTE: The 2012 model is pictured.

2015 BMW i8 Hybrid

The 2015 BMW i8 is the German manufacturer’s first plug-in hybrid, focusing on both performance and fuel economy in equal parts. Brauer expects the price to exceed $150,000 when it hits the market.

“A pure electric driving range of 20 miles will be supplemented by a small, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine mounted behind the passenger compartment,” Brauer said. “Despite the diminutive powertrain, the i8 will hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and get 70 miles per gallon.”

2013 Porsche Cayman

“Following the recent redesign of Porsche's convertible Boxster will be its coupe stable mate, the Cayman,” Brauer said. He cited a low starting price of about $55,000.

“Available in base Cayman and upscale Cayman S trim levels, this mid-engine sports car offers more horsepower and a lighter, stiffer chassis than the drop-top Boxster, making it the more serious driver’s car and a rival to Porsche's own 911.”

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

This car is expected to retail in the $200,000 range, the kind of high-end price tag that hardly raises an eyebrow for Mercedes-Benz lovers. Brauer said that in addition to the very desirable name plate, this car has a lot to recommend under the hood.

“With 154 fewer pounds to haul around, and 39 more horsepower from its 6.2-liter V8 — for a total of 622 — the new SLS AMG Black Series is now the most capable Mercedes-Benz ever produced,” he said. “A zero-to-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 196 miles per hour reflect the capabilities of this Benz, as do the carbon fiber rear wing and braking components.”

2014 Jaguar F-Type

“A worthy successor to Jaguar's iconic E-type has been a long time coming, but it's finally arrived in the 2014 F-Type roadster,” Brauer said. “The striking body panels wrap around an aluminum chassis powered by either a supercharged V6 or a supercharged V8, the latter hitting 60 mph in about 4 seconds.”

Brauer expects the F-Type to sell at a rapid clip when it’s finally unleashed. “At a starting price of $70,000 there will be a long line of buyers when it arrives next year,” he said.

2015 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic American nameplates, and it will be the subject of a complete redesign for 2015. So far, only promotional materials, such as teaser photos, have given any indication of what car buyers can expect. But Brauer had some ideas about what the future may hold for this Mustang.
“Expect the classic Mustang lines to give way to a sleek, modern shape that looks forward, not back,” he said. “The same can be said of the next Mustang's technology, where items like an independent rear suspension and cutting-edge engine tech will help it achieve performance and fuel efficiency.”

NOTE: The 2013 Mustang is shown.

2015 Acura NSX

“The Japanese exotic car that redefined the segment will return in 2015,” Brauer said. “A hybrid powertrain will be a key component of the next NSX, but familiar Acura technology, like Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, will also be included.”

“A mid-mounted V6 engine will rely on the electric motor to enhance performance and fuel efficiency,” he said. He added this Acura would likely sell for approximately $100,000, and expected it to continue the NSX tradition of offering great value to consumers.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette

The all-new, seventh-generation C7 Corvette will have a relatively low starting price of about $50,000, said Brauer, though no corners will be cut where it counts. We'll have to take his word for it though, since no images are yet available.

The Corvette will have “a base horsepower rating of 450 from its LT V8 engine,” he said. “This will sling it from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds, but a slew of advanced technology, like cylinder deactivation and direct injection, will help it achieve 26 miles per gallon on the highway.”

McLaren P1

The McLaren P1 is a concept car, and the company is still uncommitted to a specific release year. But since it was shown off at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Brauer guesses we may see this car in 2015. And it will be worth the wait. “Everyone knows the P1 will be the next great supercar from McLaren,” he said.

“As a spiritual successor to the brand's ultimate F1 supercar of the 1990s, the P1 will need to weigh less than 3,000 pounds and generate at least 700 horsepower,” he said. “Expect a top speed in excess of 225 miles per hour, and a production run of 500 units.”

Finally, as far as the small matter of what’s on the sticker, Brauer said what most of us already know. “Price?” he said. “If you have to ask...”
