One in four Brits looking to change career in 2021

A quarter of Brits are looking to change careers in 2021, according to new research from job search engine Adzuna.

This equates to 2.2 million UK workers out of 32.5 million people in employment — according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures — thinking about changing careers next year.

Some 7% of respondents said they were “definitely looking to change career” in the New Year, in the survey of 1,900 UK employees.

Some 10% of men stated they definitely want to change career in 2021, compared to 4% of women.

The research also point to the impact of COVID-19 on job insecurity among UK workers, particularly among sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Only 14% of employees in the travel and hospitality sectors feel secure in their job, while only 19% of retail sector workers reported job security.

Overall, 44% of UK workers felt their job was under threat from the pandemic, with 37% reporting job insecurity.

COVID-19 has shifted opportunities within the UK jobs market, according to the research, with hiring activity in some sectors booming while other sectors have suffered.

Job vacancies in the logistics and warehouse sector were up 77% from pre-COVID-19 levels to over 61,000 vacancies. At the other end of the scale, hospitality and catering vacancies remain 69% lower than pre-pandemic levels.

The charity and voluntary sector and the sales sector are also experiencing a significant reduction in hiring, down 47% and 42% respectively.

“This redistribution of job opportunities is likely a major factor causing many jobseekers to consider changing career,” according to the report.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “COVID-19 has turbocharged hiring in some sectors, while others have gone into reverse. This major redistribution of the job market means many jobseekers will need to pivot careers to find a new role for 2021.

“Understanding the viable options and industries that are hiring (and growing) can help workers future proof their careers. Understanding skills and how they translate from sector to sector is key in knowing which jobs to apply for.”
