STORY: :: Peruvian transport workers clash with police amid demands for greater protection against rising attacks :: They want Congress to repeal a law which they say complicates the fight against organized crime:: October 11, 2024:: Lima, Peru:: Irma Vasquez, Protester “Let’s call a national strike, we’re not afraid of 130 parasites in the Congress.”Protesters had marched to the Congress building in downtown Lima earlier in the day, calling for lawmakers to repeal a law on organized crime and a bill on urban terrorism, while also demanding greater protection from authorities amid a wave of extortion and attacks.Experts say the controversial law complicates the fight against organized crime and protesters reject efforts to modify the law to categorize crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, and contract killings as "urban terrorism," according to local media.Riot police clashed with protesters, using tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd, while demonstrators retaliated by throwing objects at officers in front of the Congress building.Following a 72-hour strike that began on Thursday, the union decided to extend the protest indefinitely after talks with Congress failed.The wave of violence prompted the government to call in the military to assist the police and declare a 60-day state of emergency in 12 districts of Lima in September to strengthen security.
