Oil firms, industrial metal miners drag down London's FTSE 100
Britain's benchmark index opened lower on Tuesday, dragged down by heavyweight oil stocks and industrial metal miners, while investors parsed through wage and employment data released earlier in the day. Oil stocks lost 2.7% and the index was the biggest sectoral loser, after oil prices slid on the back of weaker demand outlook and after a media report said Israel is willing not to strike Iranian oil targets.

Italy's cabinet will meet late on Tuesday to approve Rome's 2025 budget, amid tensions within the ruling parties over a Treasury proposal to raise taxes on banks. Prime minister Giorgia Meloni's government needs to find around 25 billion euros ($27.23 billion) to finance a raft of stimulus measures including cuts to income tax and social contributions for middle- and low-income earners. Rome has said it will widen next year's deficit to 3.3% of gross domestic product from an estimated 2.9% based on current trends, borrowing an extra 9 billion euros.

China's economy is likely to expand 4.8% in 2024, undershooting the government's target, and growth could cool further to 4.5% in 2025, a Reuters poll showed, maintaining the pressure on policymakers as they consider more stimulus measures. Authorities have sharply ramped up policy stimulus since late September in a bid to revive the flagging economy and ensure growth will reach the government's target of around 5% this year. "The main pressure is from the consumption side, which is linked to deflationary pressures," said Xing Zhaopeng, ANZ's senior China strategist.

The European Central Bank will provide an update on its monetary policy on Thursday, and is widely expected to cut rates further by 25 basis points. Bucking the upbeat mood, energy stocks slumped 2.5%, tracking a slide in oil prices after a media report said that Israel has informed the United States it will not strike Iran's oil facility, easing fears of supply disruptions.
