Every year since 1894, the first Monday in September has been a federally recognized holiday to "celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers," according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has potentially cancelled or subdued friend or family get-togethers, as well as vacations.
