What it costs to become Darth Vader

Sorry Vader, looking this good isn't cheap.
Sorry Vader, looking this good isn't cheap.

While you may not be able to match Darth Vader’s midi-chlorian count, Shade Station says you could build your own version of the famed Star Wars villain’s black armoured suit for $18.3 million. It is unclear how much that would cost in Imperial Credits.

Shade Station, a watch and sunglasses retailer based in the United Kingdom, says the brunt of the costs, an estimated $12 million, would come from building the base suit. The company says because the cockpits of Imperial starfighters – such as Vader’s Tie Advanced -- are not pressurized, it would need to be airtight and able to withstand exposure to space, like NASA spacesuits.

Another $5.4 million would be needed to cover the medical bills and maintenance of his prosthetic limbs. Vader lost both legs, his left arm and was badly burned in a battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.”

Emperor Palpatine rebuilt Vader’s ruined body using the suit.

However, Shade Station says it would only cost $180,000 for the top-of-the-line prosthetics -- $70,000 per leg and $40,000 for the arm.

An additional $600,000 would be required to construct Vader’s augmented reality helmet, which comes equipped with night vision, as well as navigation and targeting instruments. Shade Station says it would be similar to the mounted displays found in helmets of F-35 fighter jet pilots.

Vader’s lungs were also irreparably damaged during his fight with Kenobi. To keep the Sith Lord alive, a life-support system was built into his suit’s chest, which created the signature sound of his regulated breathing.

Shade Station says this machine, which also regulates his heart, would cost $45,000.

As for Vader’s trademark sonorous, bass voice, Shade Station says the high-end voice synthesizer needed to create it would cost $1,000. The cost of paying James Earl Jones to record its speech was not included.
