Rumoured discontinuation, rebranding of Pizza Pockets prompts Twitter meltdown

If you’re a Canadian who grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, chances are you spent some time sprawled out in front of the TV – with either some fantastic program like “ReBoot” or “Goosebumps” on – and either some Pizza Pops or Pizza Pockets in hand.

And it was either one or the other – allegiances weren’t taken lightly.

You either preferred scalding the roof of your mouth with the baked goodness of McCain’s Pizza Pockets, or there was something wrong with you and you were on team Pizza Pops, which always tasted as though they were covered dough-flavoured chalk (Editor's Note: Yahoo Finance Canada holds allegiance to neither Pockets nor Pops).

And those who were loyal to the baked calzone-esque snack have apparently maintained a passionate feeling of nostalgia, given their vociferous meltdown after rumours emerged Wednesday that New Brunswick-based McCain Foods Limited would be discontinuing the product.

While the company quickly zapped those rumours, telling Vice “(It) has no intention of discontinuing Canadians’ beloved Pizza Pockets,” it did reveal a half-baked idea to rebrand them under a veneer of a more healthy lineup called McMain Marche that includes the likes of “Harvest Pockets,” and “Protein Pop’ables.”

“In the coming days, consumers will see Pizza Pockets in a whole new way,” McCain told Vice in a statement.

“With a new look but the same recipe and great flavours, Pizza Pockets are now part of an exciting new snacking lineup that we’re calling McCain Marche. Packed with wholesome ingredients and irresistible flavours, McCain Marche snacks are oven-baked, never fried, and come in a variety of choices to satisfy more tastes and cravings.”

Some of these flavours include Roasted Chicken Club, Chicken and Broccoli, and Three Cheese and Spinach for its Harvest Pockets and Chicken Parmesan, Jamaican Beef and Italian Sausage for its Protein Pop’ables.

And while the baked treats had been “saved,” many on social media saw the new items as merely shells of their former glory.

However, some of the original hockey-puck pizzas will remain. McCain told the Financial Post that they will “be offered in a new format at select retailers.”

And, for now, it seems that Canadian consumers can hold on to the “perfect pizza taste” from their childhood – though, it just may be harder to get their hands on.
