Fido launches home Internet service in Canada

With Internet access as expensive as it is in Canada, Fido is looking to buck the trend by offering two solid packages at a reasonable price. The catch? You have to be a Fido customer to get in on the deal.

Starting today, those of you looking to switch up your internet service provider, and who happen to be existing Fido customers, can take advantage of a 300GB internet package for $50 per month or indulge in unlimited access for $65 per month. Customers who do not have a Fido service will have to fork over $70 or $85 respectively. We’ve provided a table below of comparable plans from other service providers to show just how good a deal Fido customers are actually getting.

Comparatively, existing Fido customers are getting a pretty solid deal. In terms of speed, usage and price it’s not too bad if you have a manageable Fido wireless bill. The real draw here, though, is that you’re not locked into a long term contract. If a new, faster and more affordable service comes along down the line, you don’t have to wait or pay a cancellation fee to move away from Fido.

A press release from Fido mentions the promotional pricing is only available to “eligible Fido customers” so we’ve reached out to Fido to find out if that’s anyone with a Fido plan, or just specific wireless contracts. If it is indeed available for regular Talk and Text plans, it is definitely worth checking out to cut back on your wireless bill. The Offer Terms and Conditions only states you must be an existing Fido Mobile postpaid account holder.

Also, the press release highlights “all-in pricing” with “no term contracts, cancellation or activation fees” but the Offer Terms and Conditions makes a mention that a “one-time $49.99 technician installation fee may apply if required and based on address condition”. This might not be applicable for all but, as always, be sure to iron out all the details before signing on the dotted line.

As a non-Fido customer, a Teksavvy internet user and one who’s just as fed up as you are with wireless and internet pricing in Canada, I’m definitely still waiting on the day where we get more competition to drive prices down. Until then, however, this is a small step in the right direction.
