Anti-theft backpack and more safety items for the savvy traveller

One of the worst fears a traveller is the prospect of having their belongings stolen. That fear is what spurred England’s Sarah Giblin to create the RiutBag, an anti-theft backpack that was named one of 2015’s best travel products and raised well over CDN$130,000 thanks to a KickStarter campaign.

What’s so impressive about this bag is that all it took was a little bit of simple reengineering to make travelling safer. The zippers on the bag are actually on the inside of it, up against the traveller’s back. That small change prevents a thief from sneaking up behind you and snatching valuable items like your tablet, wallet or passport when you’re not looking.

Of course when it comes to travelling safely, not everything revolves around your backpack. Many other inventors across the globe have come up with other cool gadgets to help keep you safe on your next trip.

Baubax, more informally known as the Swiss Army knife of travel jackets, is another KickStarter travellers may be interested in. It features 15 compartments suitable for different uses, including an inflatable neck pillow you can use to catch a quick catnap on a flight.

No need to worry about losing the jacket or the backpack though. The Trakdot Luggage Tracker can track the location of your luggage from anywhere that a cell phone can connect to. It even sends you a text message once your flight lands to let you know that your luggage has indeed arrived.

Once you are safely on the ground at your destination, you can be a tourist whether it rains or shines on vacation thanks to this practically unbreakable umbrella invented by two Vancouver. It’s dubbed as the last umbrella you’ll ever need to own and is built to withstand harsh rain and wind without turning inside out or breaking on you.

As the days go by and your trip comes to an end, it will once again be time to pack up your stuff and board a flight. Packing your belongings into the G-Ro will keep you from hurting yourself with heavy lifting. It’s a carry-on bag that comes with bigger wheels so you don’t have to break your ankles while dragging your things behind you. It’s also lightweight, and can be rolled up stairs and through snow. It has a long, ergonomic handle, and the electronic model allows you to charge anything on the go. The crowdfunding campaign for the G-Ro has raised over $3.7 million to date.

With inventions like these going into production, it should be a lot easier and safer to travel in 2016. Isn’t it amazing the stuff people come up with? Now all we need is a crowdfunding campaign that finally makes teleportation possible.
