You should check out Zenni Optical. I just bought 5 pairs for less than $100 and that included shipping. They were for myself and 4 other people. We all had different prescriptions (one fairly complicated) and everyone is happy. They may not be name brand, but they have 1000s to choose from and so long as you measure correctly, you shouldn't have any issues. My advice is to take a pair of glasses or sunglasses that you like and measure those, then base your selection off those measurements. The pupil distance isn't so hard to measure, get someone to help you if you need it, or if you have prescription, call them and ask them what it is. Totally worth it and my insurance even covered the cost when all was said and done!!!!

This is not an option for many people yet for this cost, we still get only $200 back from insurance, no matter the prescription. Now insurance must cover the cost of the exam - where else do you pay to get diagnosed? Ridiculous.

Canadians are being gouged on everything!

Yes probably. Our retailers pay big rents-insurance-and other overhead. The bottom line is the consumer pays. One must look behind the scenes to understand the prices of goods. Often the governments want to raise taxes onto the corporations-end result consumer pays.
To understand so called gouging one must try to run a business and then you can see why prices are where they are.It is easy to when one does no know all the facts. Many retailers -small businesses make little profits.

NO KIDDING!!! Bad enough the taxes....the HST was simply an add on as prices never DID drop...we simply paid an extra 7 or 8 percent MORE....and then it was added to FOOD....and to SERVICES....and purchases of HOUSES.....and then gas....and then our dollar is par with the USA and still no reprieve....just more and more taxes, higher cost of living....no jobs and no raises.

I bought my eye glasses $800 from stupid hakim optical bast-ard . the frames are chinese piece of garbage as usual and the lenses jump out every day. buch of liars and bas-tards. 3 for 1 eye glass shop is as equal as hakim optical bas-tard and it is all rip off. As long as they know that people are desparate for needing something, that is when they strart to rip off. Our government must have special units to send them to this kind of places and charge them arm and leg, that they stop ripping off innocent people . In this country there is no insurance which pays a decent money for eye glasses and this is another rip off, coz they know there are lots of people who need to see with glasses.

@Imam - you are heading for another eyeglasses disaster. Don't you have and independent optician in your city to go to?

My wife and daughter get their glasses and contacts in the Philippines. A LOT cheaper there. More choices in eyeglasses frames, too and they last forever unlike the more expensive ones here. My daughter also had her teeth braces fitted and made there.

I do it when I visit my family in Ukraine. So far so good.

Did you know in Denmark all your health services including dental and braces etc. is paid for and covered so long as you are in school....a friend who came from there told me they have dentists right in the school and even in university. Nice huh? I think it was Norway or another of these Nordic countries that if you got injured and became a paraplegic etc. the government paid for everything you needed....EVERYTHING....even a special car for you if you were able to drive without the use of your legs....imagine that??

It seems like everything related to health issues is highly priced-Eyeglasses-Hearing Aids-Wheelchairs- Braces-Root Canals-Dentures.Reason? Very little competition?

effing Canada. we get gouged on all kind of stuff. Hell look at the oil. Alberta has the oil sands and yet we still pay high A S S prices
    • CanadianPatriot 2 months ago
That's becuase for some reason we can't build an oil refinery in Canada or near the US border. Instead we have to have it refined in Mexico (or a State in America that has low taxes) so corporations can dodge taxes.
    • Citygirl 2 months ago
Worked on numerous oil refineries, they're here in Canada hun :)

This has been known for years... US eye wear, tests and procedures are a fraction of the price as they are here. Ive seen 1/5.

rip off. i saw invoices for major retailer years ago..from the orient of course. 2-10 dollars it's just plastic, or metal. don[t waste money on designer glasses either. reading glasses at dollarama is about $2.. (i don't wear reading glasses, but i know others say they work .
  • maria  •  2 months ago
Yes, glass prices are to high. What about dentist? Lack of affordability of a dental care in Canada, such a highly developed country is criminal.
  • ♥Bettsy♥  •  2 months ago
You can order frames online....just do a search....get the model numbers from the stores, order them yourself....screw them.
  • Nightshift  •  2 months ago
Yes, I'm being gouged for my glasses. my last pair were almost $400.
they were basic, nothing fancy. frames are the worst, over two hundred

What the market will bear. My clear sight progressives with a middle of the road frame came out to $1000.00. Luckily I have not had a presc. change in 6 years.
  • HusamZ  •  2 months ago
yes the materials are dirt cheap but the store has to pay for workers, and all other expenses. all that has to be added to the cost. when ever we go for vacation i buy glasses there much cheaper and high quality
  • darrell e  •  Saskatoon, Saskatchewan  •  2 months ago
My husband was told he needed progressive lenses last time he went, his prescription is very bad so we were expecting to pay a fair amount. But when we heard the price for the lenses alone we just about choked- $700 for the lenses alone, not including the frames! He passed on the progressives and it still cost him $1000 by the time we were done.

The price for two pairs of cheap frames and single vision gtlasses ? $99. cost of two frames $7.45 Cost of two lenses $6.00 Cost of slightly trained sales clerk ? $9.00 per hour. Total cost to provide two pair of cheap glasses less than $20.00 but they still try to get you to change to very expensive frames at 10 times the mark up. Total rip off every time and I hate it.
