| TOTAL S.A., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an integrated oil and gas company worldwide. The company operates in three segments: Upstream, Downstream, and Chemicals. The Upstream segment engages in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. It also engages in the marketing, trading, transport, and storage of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), LNG re-gasification, and the maritime transport and trading of liquefied petroleum gas, as well as power generation from combined cycle plants and renewable energies, the trading and marketing of electricity, and the production and marketing of coal. As of December 31, 2006, it had proved reserves of 11,120 Mboe of crude oil and natural gas. The Downstream segment engages in the refining, marketing, trading, and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products. It produces a range of specialty products, such as lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel, special fluids, bitumen, and petrochemical feedstock. As of above date, the company held interests in 27 refineries located in Europe, the United States, the French West Indies, Africa, and China, as well as operated a network of 16,534 retail stations. The Chemical segment involves in base chemicals activities, including petrochemicals and fertilizers; and specialties activities, which includes rubber processing, resins, adhesives, and electroplating activities. Its products are used in a range of domestic and industrial applications, including packaging, construction, and automobiles. The company was founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Paris, France. |
