| General Communication, Inc. provides local and long-distance voice, cable video, Internet, and wireless communications services to consumer, network access, commercial, and managed broadband customers. The company's services include origination and termination of traffic in Alaska for certain common carriers; cable television services in Alaska; facilities-based competitive local access services in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, Alaska; long-distance telephone service between Alaska and the remaining United States, and foreign countries; private line and private network services; and Internet access services. It also offers managed broadband services, including its SchoolAccess offering to rural school districts, ConnectMD offering to hospitals and health clinics, and managed video conferencing services, as well as managed services to certain commercial customers. In addition, the company engages in the resale of wireless telephone services, and sale of wireless telephone handsets and accessories; distribution of white and yellow pages directories to consumer and commercial customers in certain markets, as well as online directory products; and sale and service of dedicated communications systems and related equipment. Further, it leases and sells capacity on its fiber optic cable systems used in the transmission of interstate and intrastate private line, as well as switched message long-distance and Internet services. General Communication offers its services through telemarketing, direct mail advertising, door-to-door selling, up-selling, local media advertising, retail stores, Web site, and direct contact marketing. As of December 31, 2006, it had approximately 101,000 long-distance customers; 111,000 local access lines in service; 126,000 basic cable subscribers; 29,000 wireless subscribers; and 105,000 Internet subscribers, including 86,000 cable modem subscribers.
