| Bassett Furniture Industries, Incorporated, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture, marketing, and retail of branded home furnishings in the United States. The company's products include armoire, baker's racks, bars and wine servers, beds, benches, book cases and storage cabinets, bunk beds, chairs, desk chairs, chaises, chests, china cabinets, hutches, dining chests, combo units, curios, desks, and dining chairs. It operates in three segments: Wholesale, Retail, and Investments/Real Estate. The Wholesale segment designs, manufactures, sources, sells, and distributes furniture products to a network of The Bassett Furniture Direct (BFD) stores, which include independently-owned stores, company-owned retail stores, and partnership licensees; and independent furniture retailers. This segment also engages in wood and upholstery operations. The Retail segment operates approximately 27 company-owned stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and New York. The Investments/Real Estate segment holds a 99.8% interest in the Bassett Industries Alternative Asset Fund; a portfolio of marketable securities; retail real estate utilized by licensee operated BFD stores; and an investment in the International Home Furnishings Center in High Point, North Carolina. As of November 30, 2006, the company's BFD network consisted of approximately 134 retail stores, of which 100 were independently owned, 27 were controlled and consolidated by the company, and 7 were operated by joint ventures. It also serves furniture and department stores. The company was founded in 1902 and is based n Bassett, Virginia. |
