The company markets its pharmaceutical products to distributors, wholesalers, hospitals, government agencies, large retailers, and physicians; surgical products directly to hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers, and through distributors; and contact lens care products to retailers and optical chains, as well as to distributors for resale directly to smaller retailers and eye care professionals. It sells its products primarily in the United States, Japan, France, Spain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Mexico. The company was founded in 1945. It was formerly known as Société Fromagère Nestlé S.A. and changed its name to Alcon Universal S.A. in 1978. Further, the company changed its name to Alcon, Inc. in 2001.
