Top 10 richest Canadians

Canadian Business has crunched the numbers and found Canada’s wealthiest people for our annual Rich 100 list. And though 2012 has been a decidedly mixed year economically, it’s actually been a great year for the 100 richest Canadians—individuals so wealthy they’re members not just of the 1% but the 0.00028%. Eighty-six of them grew their net worth, while 69 are valued at more than $1 billion.

Fidani’s preference for retaining ownership of the commercial and industrial real estate projects he leads has paid dividends: according to the REALpac/IPD Canada Annual Property Index, retail, office and industrial real estate is continuing to appreciate strongly nationwide, rising nearly 15% for the year ended June 30. Fidani, whose holdings are primarily in the Greater Toronto Area, is profiting handsomely. A philanthropist with an eye on health issues, in recent years Fidani has donated $5 million to support research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and $10 million to the University of Toronto to construct a health-sciences building. In 2011, he and several partners (including former race car driver Ron Fellows) established Canadian Motorsport Ventures, a company that bought Mosport International Raceway, Canada’s largest automotive racetrack located east of Toronto.
