RIM still as clueless and arrogant as ever

When will Research in Motion finally, unabashedly own up to its own mistakes -- without equivocation, without displacing blame?

When will the madness end?

When will Research in Motion (RIMM) finally, unabashedly own up to its own mistakes -- without equivocation, without displacing blame?

Over the last few years -- as Apple (AAPL) introduced the iPhone, as Google (GOOG) unleashed one flagship Android device after another, and even as Nokia (NOK) and Microsoft (MSFT) took a chance on an unlikely partnership and delivered something impressive -- RIM has shaken its head in disgust at consumers who simply "don't get it."

Less than a year ago, former co-CEO Mike Lazaridis ranted against the critics and users who haven't "appreciated" the company's profits and growth. "Why is it that people don't appreciate the fact that we spent the last four years going global?" he ranted. "Why is it that people don't appreciate that we have 500 carriers in 170 countries with products in almost 30 languages?" Even when announcing a disastrous quarter, Lazaridis and fellow CEO Jim Balsillie couldn't heap enough praise onto each other's shoulders.

And now, as new CEO Thorsten Heins promises that no change is needed, then backpedals, then relies on the failure of iPhone and Android security in order to get ahead, RIM director Roger Martin solidifies the notion that there's little hope for the company to ever come to its senses.

In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Martin railed against the idea that RIM could've turned things around back when the industry sensed a changing of the tide. "I laugh at the vast majority of critics when they say 'Oh, you should have made this CEO transition, like, four years ago.' Yeah, right -– like, to who?"

Hypothetical or not, you sure you want to ask that question, Roger?

Judging from the stubborn and ill-fated direction that Lazaridis and Balsillie took RIM while competitors were scrambling to innovate and entice, pretty much anyone with an iota of novelty and outside perspective could've outperformed that poisonous duo. And judging from Martin's perception of the competition, he wasn't up for the task himself.

"People were saying we can't make powerful phones like Apple. Yes, we can, but we couldn't believe consumers would put up with that kind of battery inefficiency and that kind of network inefficiency."

Well, they did. In droves. Shouldn't that have clued you in on something?

But Martin indicated that change was out of the question, as he scoffed at the notion that bringing in an outsider would have done anything good, comparing the move to flailing companies like Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), and, um, Apple.

"So we're supposed to hand it over to children, or morons from the outside who will destroy the company?" he asked. "Or should we try to build our way to having succession?"

From the looks of things, it appears you're trying to do both, Roger.

But surprisingly, against all odds, the RIM director managed to dig himself even deeper by praising the leadership of the former co-CEOs and actually backdated a comparison to Apple by nearly three decades so RIM's management would look superior.

"People just don't understand the depth of understanding these guys have of their business, the connections." Adding, "[Critics] ask 'Why can't you be more like Apple?' So we should go bankrupt and fire our founders and bring in a moron? That's what we should do?"

No need, Roger. They already have at least one at the top.

Seriously, yahoo you have nothing better to report. Everyday I read an anti-RIM article here. Better get your reporting right, or I'll switch my home page!!! That's a threat!, lol.

I wonder if Yahoo recalls losing to Google and that is why they like to bash others?

I'm confused. What is RIM doing wrong? They might not be as big as Apple but when I look around all I see is Blackberry's? What's the deal here. Someone explain?
    • Patrick 3 months ago
They havent innovative the way that the rest of the phone industry has. New phones aren't blackberrys anymore, what you see are people forced into them by the company's they work for. Or they are teens who like to have a "professional" phone like what daddy has, these people usually have a ipod touch as well lol.
    • promo_diva 3 months ago
I'm not a teen, and I haven't been "forced" into my BB. It's easy to make a generalization about people who prefer one product over another. I could easily say that those with Iphones are sheeple and looking to conform to the herds. Apple has a great marketing plan. They've done well, but to me, that doesn't take away from the fact that I love my BB. It does what I need it to do, when I need it to do it and does it securely.
    • Snake 3 months ago
People simply want the latest and greatest. When RIMs latest handsets came out (9900, 9810, etc), iPhone and Android handsets were already coming out with the next gen tech with twice the specs. BBs are very secure. That's all they have going for them at the moment. They just seem to by 2-3 steps behind all the time, and with today's consumers, that's not good enough.

I think its funny when the critics, who are nothings , never invented anything , never made a thing in there lives take shots at rim and bb , rim poineered the smart phone industry , has the most secure operating system on the market, black berry has carved out a great nische market that still sells 70 million bb ,,,,,,whats wrong with that you nothings ?
    • G 3 months ago
The ciritcs who are nothing ? So who are you TIm C? Everyone is allowed their own opinion , it doesnt make them a nothing . You seem to be pretty high and mighty to call people nothings , please do tell us what makes you a 'non nothing'
    • JohnV 3 months ago
Of course it's secure. Remember the Moroccan guy who just got arrested on terrorism and his whole crew got jailed at the border? He was texting on RIM and got arrested by the RCMP dogs . Shut up and be consistent you idiot.
    • Tom 3 months ago
@Gavin H: Yes, everyone is allowed their opinion, but news organizations don't publish them all as articles. This one should have appeared with the other opinions here in the comment section.
  • OnNotice  •  3 months ago
Why Yahoo prints this garbage, I'll never know. Save your opinion Mike, we not interested in listening to your crap. BTW - Do you happen to have shares in competitor stock?
  • gooseberry  •  3 months ago
Ah yes. More RIM bashing. For the past 2 years there has been a sustained attempt to drive RIM into the ground by the media. Let's see. Google owns iPhones and Yahoo? Looking for cheap enough stock prices to snap up a competitor?

RIM: $20 B in sales, 24% growth ($1.5 Billion in cash on books)
    YAHOO: $5 B in sales, -13% growth
Yes Yahoo, RIM is a colossal failure and Yahoo a huge success story.

I have three teens in the house, being an active parent and very involved in their social, education and recreational activities brings me in contact with hundreds of teens. Over the last few years, I've watched as Apple has supposedly kicked RIM but, however you know what, the tool of choice for these 12-18 year old's is the Blackberry - en mass. Yes they all have iPods, however BBM rocks their world.

Apple's entire advertising campaign is based off of bashing the competition. These articles are obviously written by people on Apple's payroll.
  • heffernan_ca  •  3 months ago
The Playbook has been discounted to get it into people's hands. Once enough people own one, it will help RIM in the near future to keep a foothold in the tablet market, especially upon the release of their new operating system.
  • frazzle  •  Kitchener, Ontario  •  3 months ago
I think the person who wrote this article is the moron. To sit at your computer and type a bunch of garbage about the failure of RIM leadership is a joke. If you are so wise, then why on earth are you writing crap articles for Yahoo? Your failure to even acknowledge the success of the company and the challenges they face is just proof of your idiocy. Thanks for wasting my time.
  • Michelle  •  New Tecumseth, Ontario  •  3 months ago
Yahoo whould know a thing or two about lost market share and just running the same play. Seriously, Yahoo talking smack about how anyone else runs their technology business is a joke.
  • Moonie  •  3 months ago
@K M - I totally agree with you!! It IS a vendetta against RIM. All negative stuff all the time. I never had a problem with their products (Blackberrys and Playbook), I love their products and the security they provide.
  • jennagar  •  Kitchener, Ontario  •  3 months ago
I'm confused... is this seriously a news article? Or is it an editorial from a sarcastic pimple faced smart@ss 17 year-old that has parents high up in the yahoo organization.

More RIM bashing from Yahoo..... I wonder how much they get paid for this and by whom?......

Yet another Yahoo biased story bashing RIM and applauding Apple. I think Yahoo has a weekly quota to fill.
  • berry  •  New Tecumseth, Ontario  •  3 months ago
what is that when you have something that works good but someone comes up with something that may have more bells and whistles you are supposed to copy them.
What is wrong with liking what you have. So what Apple phone can talk to you, that is when it understands what you are saying. I have a blackberry and a playbook and my whole family, we like to support our Canadian companies. They have a great product, why is society so into getting better bigger etc everything. I don't go out and buy a new fridge or stove everytime they come out with something new because the ones I have work fine. I don't have to pay the prices the Apple phone cost to run it. I have everything I need on my blackberry. I don't have to worry about dropping a piece of glass and shattering it to pieces like the iphone does. My phone is sturdy and realiable and I don't run out of battery life before the day is out. Why the constant bashing of a company who has a great product, I am quite sick of it really. Enjoy your blackberry's and don't fall into this attempted media takedown of a great product Stick with your blackberry. If you watch TV you will see Blackberry's everywhere, not iphones. Not to mention the fact that we as Canadians are always upset when we look at a product that is not Canadian any longer well if you stick to your blackberry you will be helping out a lot of Canadians who work for RIM and run yet still a very profitable company giving us Canadians a great product.
  • siguy  •  3 months ago
You know i have a torch and a playbook. They always work, never had a problem. They fuction well for what i use them for. The same as apple products, they work when you need them. They both dont do my dishes or drive my car so why the hype?
