RBC, Shoppers Drug Mart launch debit card that earns points

A leading Canadian bank and one of the country’s most popular loyalty programs have joined forces to offer consumers more ways to earn points on a new co-branded debit card.

New RBC Shoppers Optimum Banking Account - Debit Card. Handout/RBCA leading Canadian bank and one of the country’s most popular loyalty programs have joined forces to offer consumers more ways to earn points on a new co-branded debit card.

Royal Bank of Canada and Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. jointly announced Tuesday they’re launching the RBC Shoppers Optimum card, effective March 17.

Cardholders can earn twice as many Optimum points every time they make a purchase at a Shoppers Drug Mart store (or a Pharmaprix in Quebec) and also earn points on purchases made at other retailers.

“Together, we are advancing the banking and retail experience by making financial products and everyday banking more accessible,” said Dave McKay, group head, Canadian Banking RBC. “This is the first step in a new alliance that will make banking more convenient by expanding beyond our branches and providing Canadians with enhanced reward options on everyday spending.”

The move, which will see Shoppers install RBC bank machines in 300 of its 1,200 stores across the country, is the latest example of innovative ways Canada’s banks are competing to secure new customers.

The banks are also sprucing up their branches, extending their hours on weekends, and improving customer service, industry experts said.

“About 15 to 20 years ago you did almost everything with your local bank,” said David McVay, a principal in McVay and Associates, a Toronto-based financial services consulting firm. “Today, it’s easy to split your relationship between one bank for your chequing account, another one for your mortage and another for your RRSPs.”

“The consumer is more fragmented than they used to be,” McVay said.

The move comes three months after BMO Bank of Montreal launched a co-branded debit card with Sobeys, the country’s second largest supermarket chain.

However, the two programs differ on several key points.

The BMO Club Sobeys card is a discount banking product, more like those offered by ING or PC financial, where cardholders save on fees and earn higher than average interest rates if they maintain a high balance.

In comparison, the RBC Shoppers Optimum card will be a “full-service” product, comparable to the bank’s “no-limit” chequing account, which comes with a monthly fee of $10.95 but includes unlimited debit transactions.

RBC and Shoppers say they plan to back up the program with extensive marketing, including salespeople in the stores.

The companies say they also plan to jointly offer additional banking and insurance products. No specifics were announced.

“Aligning with RBC allows us to expand upon our current financial services officer, providing our customers with even greater convenience and enhanced rewards,” Shoppers’ president and chief executive officer, Dominic Pilla, said in a statement.

The retailer offers a co-branded Optimum credit card with MasterCard.

Members of Shoppers’ Optimum loyalty program currently earn 10 points for every $1 spent in the store. With an RBC Optimum card, they’ll earn an additional 10 points in Shoppers and a single point for every $1 spent at other locations.

As well, holders of other RBC loyalty cards, such as its Visa Avion brand credit card, will be able to transfer those points to the Optimum program if they wish, using them to buy cosmetics or groceries or other drugstore merchandise instead of travel.

Carrying a wheel barrow full of loyalty cards in 2012 is dumb....sorry but it is. One loyaly card could be created that all companies sign on to. The data required is the same for all purchases...who you are, what you bought and the date you bought it. On the other hand we can go without a loyalty card and remain second class customers...better still just be loyal to good service and price.

The monthly fee is for the RBC bank account, not the points card.

yeah Jo, we got that.. but why pay that much for a monthly fee. we pay only $4 for unlimited transactions on our RBC bank account.

More gimmicks and more cards that people don't need or want, just lower your damn prices and you will get more customers it's that simple.

don't collect point's these companys have to much personal info with there rewards cards.
If you don't want to give the sale price for not having your silly card I will just go to Wal-Mart and they will price match.

you don't need your optimum card to get the sale prices, you just need if you collect the optimum points.

Just another scam! Shoppers isnt cheap unless you only buy stuff when it is on sale then you get bargains! Shop carefully I saved $27 yesterday buy only buying sale items. Also when they say double points for spending $50 work out what you are buying so you get the most for your $50 and only spend your $50 or as close to it as you can otherwise they have won! Their perogative is to get you in the store by advertising great sales so be careful.

"Their perogative is to get you in the store by advertising great sales so be careful".Isn't that the purpose of all sales flyers? To get you into the store to shop?

If you REALLY want to save money...don't shop at Shoppers, that simple. They are so overpriced, I get angry everytime I go there. No amount of points will make up for the $12 they charge for make-up sponges ($1 at any dollar store), or the $3.50 they charge for shampoo that evreyone else is selling for $2.49.

if you buy shampoo that cheap you hair must look like crap! Nice way to ruin your hair AND the environment with all the cheap chemicals and fillers that are in cheap shampoo.

News Flash.....Shoppers is a freaking ripoff!!! Overpriced everything.
In fact, if they didn't have shops in urban areas where people don't drive, they'd be in a world of hurt.

As a person with a chronic illness and many perscriptions, I have enjoyed the Optium program to the tune of up to $1200/yr. I also bank with RBC already so I think this is terrific!

I don't know if anyone else feels the same way, but I personally have learned to ignore the urge to become a professional consumer in today's society of highly involved materialism. I don't watch flyers for sales on things I don't need, don't do the loyalty points thing, don't watch WagJag/Groupon for deals on stuff I wouldn't have otherwise bought, and don't hound my service providers constantly for better deals. Life is better if you just let all of that stuff go. I know a number of people (mostly, like me, aged 25-35) who spend their free time looking for excellent deals on anything. It takes so much work to be a perfect consumer nowadays in terms of getting the optimal deal (considering the points, bundling of purchases, etc.) that I refuse to play the game. I love my free time! Thumbs up if you feel the same!

I already get 10 points per $1.00 in the store with my Options card plus if I use my Shoppers' MasterCard I get an additional 15 points. In other stores I get 5 points with my MasterCard. SO - this is an improvement how?? PS I only shop for items on sale.

Shoppers Drug Mart, a store that charges higher than anywhere else! Any one who shops there really needs their head checked.
  • jilli  •  Squamish, British Columbia  •  4 months ago
What a huge joke! Shoppers Drug Mart would better be called the one stop toxic shop. Just about everything they sell is bad for you. Consumers are getting smarter and are looking for alternatives to toxic make-up, body lotion, deodorants and fragrances as well as cleaning solutions. Time for them to change their product line if they want my business
