1. The Possession (Lionsgate): $9.5 million in 2,834 theaters [Week 2]

So, remember a few weeks ago when we said, "No One Went to the Movies This Weekend," but like, people actually went and that was just some hyperbole? Well, this week it's not. This is the first time in four years that no movie grossed over $10 million. If total revenues stack up as expected, this could be the worst weekend since post-9/11:
[2008's post-Labor Day weekend] revenues reached $68 million; this weekend, they are expected to top out between $65 million and $67 million (final figures won't be available until Monday). If so, that would mark the worst weekend since immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when revenues topped out at $66.5 million the weekend immediatley following the attacks and $59.7 million over the Sept. 21-23 weekend.
Welp. Anyway, next week we get two big Oscar movies in Arbitrage and The Master, so at least we have that to look forward to.

2. Lawless (The Weinstein Company): $6 million in 3,138 theaters [Week 2]

Bootleggers are eccentric, wonderful people. They give you booze! They're like every other bartender, except less legal. Always tip your bootlegger.

3. The Words (CBS Films): $5 million in 2,801 theaters
How did Jonah Lehrer option his story into a movie deal so quickly? That's gotta be a record. Also, this is the only new movie. It was made by CBS Films. I shouldn't have to say anything else.
4. The Expendables 2 (Lionsgate): $4.8 million in 3,260 theaters [Week 4]
Can we pass a law that says Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the villain in every action movie from this point on until he is dead? He was so good in this. The best part, even. His performance wasn't anything spectacular, just him smirking and mugging and flexing. But it all worked because he hasn't done the evil villain role in, say, Spy Kids 14. He hasn't done that cringe-worthy kids movie role. Keep it up, JCVD.
5. The Bourne Legacy (Universal): $4 million in 2,766 theaters [Week 5]
Jeremy Renner looks short. He is 5'8", according to Google. That's fairly average, yes? We call shenanigans.
